The Northwestern College women's tennis team opened the 2010 season last weekend with a pair of losses to Southwest Minnesota State and Bethel (Minn.). The Red Raiders lost 7-2 to the Mustangs on Friday night in St. Cloud and then were defeated by Bethel 9-0 on Saturday afternoon.
In Friday night's match, junior Nessa Summers picked up a straight set win (7-6 (7-3), 6-0) at #5 singles over Angie Wiegmann. Senior newcomer Bobbie Lydick earned a hard-fought, three-set win at #6 singles over Katie Carlson, 6-4, 5-7, 11-9. Summers and junior Kate Mannenbach turned in the best NWC performance in doubles play, losing 8-3 at #3.
Against Bethel College on Saturday, freshman Kellie Korver lost in a thrilling three-setter at #3 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-10. In doubles, Korver and Jessica Pomerenke forced a tie-break but lost 9-8 (7-4) at #2. Summers and Mannenbach lost 8-5 at #3 doubles.
The Red Raiders will have nearly a month off before they open conference play against Nebraska Wesleyan and Hastings on March 27 in Lincoln, Neb.
