Spree Returns to NWC to Lead Much Improved Raiders in Pre-Season Opener The Red Raiders started the season off by traveling to Mason City, Iowa to compete in a very competitive pre-season opening tournament. No official team scores were recorded, but the finals were dominated by the 2006 NAIA National Champions, Dana College who had four of 10 champions. “This is a good gage for us to compete this early against one of the top programs in the nation who also happens to be in our region and conference, so we plan on seeing a lot of them.” The Raiders, lead by transfer Cole Spree (Jr. Ellsworth Community College), had a very solid day, placing four of their six wrestlers. Spree made it to the 184 lb championship match before suffering his only defeat of the day, by a 3-7 decision. His effort would be good enough to lead the first of national qualifiers. “It is good to get that monkey off my back” stated Spree, who attended NWC before transferring to Ellsworth College in 2006. “I am excited that Cole choose to return to NWC. He is a good fit for our program and brings a lot of good qualities both on and off the mat” stated Coach Petty. Other Raiders that qualified for nationals in their first tournament of the season are; returning All-American, Enock Francois (Jr. Lake Park, FL) who injury defaulted to share 5th place with new teammate, transfer, Tom Eaton (Jr. Santa Ana Community College, CA) and returning 2007 national qualifier Lamar Reed (So. Tarzana, C A). “As a team, we are much improved from last seasons start and that makes us happy any time we see improvement. We can only control the things in our power. We can not control any other team (until we get them on the mat:), but we can control our efforts in our preparations in workouts and our practices," said coach Petty. NIACC Open Results
