Red Raiders Open Spring Season At Grand View

Game Time...Northwestern College will make its spring season debut this weekend as they play Grand View in a non-conference match. Friday's match is held at the Aspen Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa and will begin at 1pm. The Red Raiders are 0-2 this season while Grand View is 4-2. 

All-Time...Northwestern is a perfect 2-0 all-time against Grand View, earning a 9-0 win in 2012 and a 7-2 victory last season. The Red Raiders swept all three doubles' matches and Frankie Eszes (1), Terry Odera (2), Hannah Stark (4) and Amanda Bueltel (6) all picked up wins in singles play.

Scouting Grand View...The Vikings finished the fall season with a 4-2 record, earning wins over Buena Vista, University of Dubuque and Loras College in its final three matches. They also defeated Simpson and lost to Central and Grinnell. Grand View, like Northwestern is making its spring season debut. 

Bob Peterson returns for his second season as the head of the Grand View's women's tennis program. He returns five players off a 2012-13 squad that finished with a 3-12 overall record. 

Freshman Brigitta Benitez leads the Vikings with a 6-0 singles' record, played all in the #2 spot. She also boasts an undefeated 6-0 record in doubles' play along with partner Natalia Romero. Romero, a junior from Ecuador, has a 5-1 record in the top singles' spot. Another freshman, Kylar McCann, is 4-2 in singles' play and 5-1 in the #3 doubles spot with partner Michaela Pearson. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders finished the fall season with an 0-2 record, losing to Coe College (9-0) and Buena Vista (6-3). 

Jeff Guthmiller is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Red Raiders and returns four players off a 2012-13 squad that finished in fourth place in the GPAC with a 3-4 record, 7-11 overall. They lost in the GPAC semifinals to top seed Nebraska Wesleyan. Guthmiller is 60-72 all-time, 30-25 in conference play, leading the Red Raiders to the postseason in each of the last four years. 

Junior Frankie Eszes returns for her third season and owns a 27-12 overall record in singles' play, 0-2 this season. Eszes is a two-time all-conference pick and became the program's first NAIA All-American back in the 2012 season. She was also named the GPAC player of the year that year. Eszes ranks fourth all-time with 27 career wins. Valerie Robinson, a sophomore who transferred from Northern State, is 1-1 so far this season. She went 10-3 in singles and 7-3 in doubles' play last year. Hannah Stark returns for her third season and went 6-12 in the #4 spot last year. Stark is 12-28 all time, 0-2 this year. Amanda Bueltel earned honorable mention all-conference honors after going 10-5 in singles play last year, her first season in the tennis program. Bueltel, along with newcomer McKayla Johnson, are both 0-2 this year.

Probable line-up: Singles: Eszes (0-2), Robinson (1-1), Stark (0-2), Brower (0-0), Bueltel (0-2), Johnson (0-2). Doubles: Eszes/Brower (1-1), Robinson/Bueltel (0-0) and Stark/Johnson (0-0) 

Up Next...Northwestern will play Bethany (Kan.) in Sioux City, Iowa, on Feb. 22.
