Northwestern To Play Morningside in GPAC Tennis Match

Game Time...The Northwestern College women's tennis team will head to Sioux City, Iowa to play Morningside in a GPAC women's tennis match beginning at 4pm. Northwestern is in third place in the GPAC with a 3-1 record, 5-7 overall, while Morningside is tied with Nebraska Wesleyan for first place in the conference at 5-0, 10-7 overall. 

All-Time...Northwestern is 1-5 all-time against Morningside and has lost three straight in the series. Last year, the Red Raiders were defeated 6-3 in the regular season and 5-2 in the GPAC semifinals. 

Morningside News and Notes...The Mustangs are currently tied with Nebraska Wesleyan for first place in the GPAC with a 5-0 record, 10-7 overall. Since losing three straight non-conference matches to start the spring season, Morningside has rattled off seven consecutive wins. Last time out, they defeated Hastings 9-0 on April 20. 

Larry Mason, the 2012 GPAC women's tennis coach of the year, is in his sixth season as the head coach of both the Morningside women's and men's tennis programs. He returns all but one player off a 2012 team that finished second in the GPAC with a 6-1 record, 14-7 overall. They lost to Nebraska Wesleyan in the GPAC Championship held last year in Fremont, Neb.

Four players who earned first team all-conference honors in singles' play return for the Mustangs, led by senior Mary Horton, who plays in the top singles' spot. Horton also earned first team accolades in doubles play. Amanda Przymus, Audri Swisher and Megan Solberg also return after earning the postseason honor. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are 3-1 in conference play, good for third place, with three matches left to play. They are 5-7 overall but have won two straight matches heading into Wednesday, earning a 5-4 win over Hastings last time out. 

Frankie Eszes leads Northwestern with a 7-5 singles record and ranks fifth all-time with 25 career wins. The 2012 GPAC player of the year is already the single season record holder with 18 wins set last year. Amanda Bueltel is 6-4 in singles play while Hannah Stark, Missy Yorchak and Terry Odera all have four wins each. Stark and Bueltel are a combined 4-6 at #3 doubles. 

Up Next...Northwestern will wrap up GPAC play this weekend as they play Concordia and Doane on Saturday, April 27 in Fremont, Neb. at 10am and 2pm.
