Women's Golf At Second GPAC Qualifier

The Event...Northwestern College will compete in the second GPAC Qualifier on Monday, Oct. 6, held at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. The first Red Raider golfer will tee off around 12:40pm.

Teams Competing...All 11 Great Plains Athletic Conference members will bring teams to the event.

Format...This is the second of four, 18-hole rounds that will determine the GPAC team and individual champion. The winner will advance to play in the NAIA women's golf championship in the spring. The final two qualifiers will be played in the spring.

First Qualifer Recap...Emma Wynja earned medalist honors at the first GPAC Qualifier played Sept. 15 at The Ridge in Sioux Center, Iowa. 

Wynja carded a five-over 76 and won by two strokes over five golfers who tied for second with a 78. Wynja's 76 is the second lowest 18-hole score ever recorded in the history of the women's golf program (Wynja has the record-low of 75 at the BCU Invite in 2012)

Northwestern is in second place after the first qualifier with a season-best 334, tied for the fourth best team score in the program's history. They trail first round leader Dakota Wesleyan, who shot a 312, by 22 strokes. Concordia is in third place with a 343, followed by Mount Marty (347) and Nebraska Wesleyan (357). 

In addition to Wynja, Jessica Locker tied for 12th with an 85 while Elizabeth DeJong finished 15th with a season-best 86. Courtney Hummel also carded a season-best in shooting an 87 and tying for 16th and Betsy Wallin tied for 28th with a 91. 

GPAC Qualifier #1

Last Time Out...Northwestern College won the team championship at the two-day Lila Frommelt/BCU Classic held at Two Rivers Golf Club in Dakota Dunes, S.D. on Sept. 25-26.

In second place after a round one score of 350 on Thursday, the Red Raiders overcame a 12-shot deficit in the final round to tie Concordia for first with a 36-hole total of 692. Northwestern won the team championship in a playoff. The host team, Briar Cliff, finished third with a 703 (353/350), followed by Morningside who placed a distant fourth with a 718 (359/359). 

Jessica Locker was the top Red Raider golfer, placing third overall out of 50 players with a two-day total of 170. The senior shot a season-best 81 in today's second round. 

Four additional Red Raiders finished in the top 16, led by Emma Wynja who tied for fourth with a 172 (82/90). Courtney Hummel tied for eighth with a 175 (88/87) and Betsy Wallin tied for 11th with a 36-hole score of 177 (91/86). Elizabeth DeJong tied for 16th with a 180.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders own a scoring average of 346.4 and have finished in the top four in every meet this fall. They won two events (Northwestern and BCU) and have to second place finishes.

Emma Wynja is the top Red Raider golfer, holding an average of 82.6 in five events played. The senior has two first place finishes, three in the top five and placed in the top 10 in all five. Jessica Locker is second on the team with an 86.7 average and three top five finishes. Betsy Wallin has one top five finish and a scoring average of 88.1. Courtney Hummel (91.1) and Elizabeth DeJong (92.3) round out the Red Raider golfers competing on Monday.

This will end the fall season for the Red Raiders.
