Women's Golf To Play at Briar Cliff Invite

The Event...Northwestern College will compete in the two-day Lila Frommelt Classic, hosted by Briar Cliff, on Sept. 25-26. Thursday's first round will begin around 1pm and both rounds will be played at Two Rivers Golf Course. 

Teams Competing...Among the teams competing are Briar Cliff, Concordia, Dordt, Midland, Morningside and Mount Marty. 

Last Time Out...Northwestern finished second at the first GPAC qualifier played at The Ridge on Sept. 15.

The Red Raiders scored a season-best 334 and tied for the fourth best team score in the program's history. They trail first round leader Dakota Wesleyan, who shot a 312, by 22 strokes. Concordia is in third place with a 343, followed by Mount Marty (347) and Nebraska Wesleyan (357). 

Emma Wynja earned medalist honors with a five-over 76, winning by two strokes over five golfers who tied for second with a 78. Wynja's 76 is the second lowest 18-hole score ever recorded in the history of the women's golf program (Wynja has the record-low of 75 at the BCU Invite in 2012). 

Jessica Locker tied for 12th with an 85 while Elizabeth DeJong finished 15th with a season-best 86. Courtney Hummel also carded a season-best in shooting an 87 and tying for 16th and Betsy Wallin tied for 28th with a 91. 

Last Year...Northwestern College took first place at the Briar Cliff/Lila Frommelt women's golf invitational held last year at the Two Rivers Golf Club.

The Red Raiders shot a 343, finishing six strokes in front of second place Morningside (349). Mount Marty finished a distant third with a 360, followed by Midland (367) and Dordt (372). 

Taylor Malenke won a playoff against teammate Elizabeth De Jong to take home medalist honors. Both shot an 83 (+13). Emma Wynja tied for third with an 84 and Betsy Wallin and Courtney Hummel tied for 10th with an 88. Jessica Locker (24th-94), Abby Van Gorp (T30-97) and Amanda Den Herder (T32-98) round out the Red Raider scores. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have finished in the top four in every meet this fall, winning one event and placing second in two meets. They have a team average of 346.6. Senior Emma Wynja leads the team with an 81.2 scoring average and an 83.8 career average. Wynja is in the first place after the first round of the 72-hole GPAC Qualifier and is the current GPAC player of the week. Jessica Locker has a scoring average of 87.4 and has two top five finishes. Locker has a career average of 91.7. Betsy Wallin ranks third on the team with an 88.0 scoring average, 90.3 for her career. Wallin has one top five finish. Courtney Hummel (92.6), Elizabeth DeJong (93.2), Mikayla Christensen (95.5), Jamie Altena (102) and Mallory Simmelink (102.5) are the other Red Raider golfers. 

Up Next...Northwestern will conclude its fall season at the second GPAC Qualifier on Oct. 6 at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.
