The Event...The Northwestern College women's golf team will compete in the two-day Palace City Classic this weekend in Mitchell, S.D. The 36-hole event begins Friday, Sept. 12 at the Lakeview Golf Club with a shotgun start at 1pm. Saturday's second round will be played at Wild Oak Golf Course at 9am. Both courses are around 5,900 yards.
Teams Competing...A total of seven teams are scheduled to compete; Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Morningside, Mount Marty, University of Jamestown and Waldorf.
Last Year...Northwestern finished second at last year's two-day event, opening with a school-record 326 and shooting a 347 on Saturday for a total of 673. They trailed Dakota Wesleyan by 32 strokes as the Tigers shot a 641 on their home course.
Taylor Malenke was the top NWC golfer, tying for third with a 160 (80/80). Emma Wynja and Betsy Wallin tied for eighth with a 167 and Elizabeth De Jong finished 20th with a 181. Jessica Locker tied for 23rd with a 185.
Lauren Fitts (DWU) earned medalist honors, winning in a playoff against her teammate, Chelsea Burback. Both players shot a 157.
Last Time Out...Northwestern finished second at the eight-team Dordt Invite in a preview of the upcoming GPAC Qualifier. The Red Raiders carded a 368, two shots in back of Mount Marty. Midland was just one shot in back of NWC, followed by Morningside and Concordia.
Jessica Locker tied for second and was the top Red Raider golfer, shooting an 86. Emma Wynja tied for seventh with an 89 and Betsy Wallin tied for 24th with a 96. Both Courtney Hummel and Elizabeth DeJong tied for 24th with a 97.
About Northwestern...Through two meets this season, Northwestern has a team scoring average of 351.5. Wynja leads the team with an 83.5 scoring average, followed closely by Locker at 85.5. Wallin (91), DeJong (91.5) and Hummel (95.5) round out the Red Raider golfers traveling this weekend.
Up Next...Northwestern will play in the first GPAC Qualifier on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at The Ridge in Sioux Center, Iowa.
