Women's Golf Begins Play at GPAC Championship

The Event...Northwestern College opens play at the 2013-14 GPAC women's golf championship tomorrow (Sept. 10). Tuesday's round will be held at the Wild Oak Golf Club in Mitchell, S.D. The Red Raiders will tee off on hole one beginning at 12:40pm, along with golfers from Dakota Wesleyan and Doane.

Teams Competing...All 11 conference teams will play in the 72-hole event and will play in groups of three. The first wave (Morningside, NWU and Briar Cliff) will tee off on the front nine at noon, followed by the Northwestern group (NWC, DWU and Doane). The last two waves will begin play on the back nine at noon (CNC, Midland) and 12:40pm (Dordt, MMC and Hastings).

Format...The GPAC golf championship consists of four, 18-hole rounds played at four different sites throughout the year, two during the fall season and two in the spring. The top team and top individual after the four rounds win the GPAC Championship and earns the automatic bid to the NAIA women's golf championship held in May. The second qualifier round will be played at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa. The spring rounds will take place on April 23 (Fremont Country Club) and May 5 (Fox Run Golf Club in Yankton, S.D.)

Last Year...Northwestern finished second in the 2012-13 GPAC women's golf championship. The Red Raiders registered a 72-hole team score of 1,422, second to only Dakota Wesleyan, who captured its fifth straight GPAC title with a four-round total of 1,351. Morningisde finished third overall with 1,441. 

Four Northwestern golfers finished in the top 15 overall, led by Emma Wynja who finished fourth with a 72-hole total of 340, just two strokes in back of third place Jenna Winckler (DWU). Taylor Kline finished alone in 11th place with a 359 and Betsy Wallin tied for 12th with a 361. Jessica Locker finished 15th  with a 367. 

Three Dakota Wesleyan golfers, Lauren Pitts, Chelsea Burback and Winckler, finished in the top three spots. Pitts won the GPAC individual championship with a four-round score of 325. 

Last Year's Results

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have played in two meets this fall, taking first at their home meet and second at the Morningside Invite. Both were played last week. Northwestern has a scoring average of 348.5. 

Junior Emma Wynja leads the team with an 82.5 scoring average and has two runner-up finishes so far this year. Wynja, a two-time all-conference player, has a career average of 84. Taylor Malenke has a scoring average of 87.5 and has one top five finish this year. The senior has a career scoring average of 88.2 and has earned all-conference honors the last three years. Betsy Wallin earned all-conference honors last year and ranks third on the team with a 89.5 scoring average this year. Jessica Locker has an average of 90.5 with one top 10 finish this fall. Courtney Hummel (91.5), Amanda Den Herder (92.0) and Elizabeth DeJong (92.5) are the other top players for the Red Raiders. 

Up Next...Northwestern will play in the Briar Cliff Invite on Sept. 14 at the Two Rivers Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa.
