Women's Golf To Make Season Debut

The Event...The Northwestern College women's golf team will make its 2013-14 season debut at its home meet, the Red Raider Invitational, played on Tuesday, Sept. 3. There will be 1pm shotgun start at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange City, Iowa. Landsmeer is a par 72 and will play around 6,000 yards.

Teams Competing...Northwestern will field both varsity and junior varsity teams, along with two individual players. Golfers from Briar Cliff, Dordt, Midland, Morningside and Mount Marty are also scheduled to compete.

Last Time at the Red Raider Fall Invite...Northwestern did not host an event last year and last hosted its fall meet on Sept. 8, 2011. The Red Raiders shot a 345 and finished second to Dakota Wesleyan that day, led by then-freshmen Betsy Wallin and Emma Wynja who finished second and third with an 81 and 83, respectively.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Northwestern College women's golf team had another successful season in 2012-13, finishing within the top five of the conference for the 10th time since the 2000 season. The Red Raiders placed second at the four-round, 72-hole GPAC Championship for the second straight year, finishing behind conference champion and national qualifier Dakota Wesleyan. Despite several spring meets having to be cancelled due to the cold, wet weather, the Red Raiders managed to record the fifth lowest team average (355.3). Catherine Van Der Weide, who was named head coach last December after serving as the assistant during the fall portion of the season, returns five letterwinners and 10 players off last year's squad, including three players who earned all-conference laurels.

Van Der Weide returns three seniors who have been a part of the program over the last three years. Taylor (Kline) Malenke (Glenrock, Wyo.) is a three-time all-conference player who ranked second on the team with a 90.6 scoring average last season. She recorded three, top-10 finishes and placed 11th at the conference championship. Malenke has a career average of 88.2 and 15 top-10 finishes. Abby Van Gorp (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Jenni Vander Veen (Worthington, Minn.) have played a combined 29 rounds during their three-year career and have an average of 103.1 and 101.7, respectively.

A deep and talented junior class returns to Coach Van Der Weide's squad, including four players who have varsity experience. Emma Wynja (Sioux Falls, S.D.) earned first team all-conference honors for the second straight year after placing fourth at the GPAC Championship last season. Wynja carded a team-best 83.6 scoring average, the third lowest in the program's history, and finished in the top 10 in all but one meet. She won two meets and holds the record for the lowest 18-hole score (75 @ BCU Invite), owning an 84.1 career scoring mark. Betsy Wallin (Rosemount, Minn.) also earned all-conference honors after finishing tied for 12th at the GPAC Championship. Wallin was third on the team with a 91 scoring average and placed in the top 10 in two meets. She has a 91.7 career scoring average with five top-10 finishes. Jessica Locker (Orange City, Iowa) played in all seven events and had the fourth best season average (92.8) last season. Locker had one top five and two top-10 finishes, placing 15th at the GPAC Championship. She has a 93.2 career scoring average. Elizabeth De Jong (Orange City, Iowa) played in four events and earned her first letter for the Red Raiders last year. De Jong recorded a 97.3 scoring average in the four rounds she played. Amanda Den Herder (Sioux Center, Iowa) rounds out the junior class and has a 96.8 career scoring average with one top five finish.

Two sophomores, Mallory Simmelink (Orange City, Iowa) and Sarah Tegtemeier (Marion, Iowa), are on the roster for the 2013-14 season. Due to the wet, cold weather in the spring, both players played sparingly but Simmelink had an average of 107.3 in three meets. Coach Van Der Weide brought in one freshman, Courtney Hummel (Hawarden, Iowa), an all-state player from West Sioux High School.

Up Next...Northwestern will next play in a meet hosted by Morningside on Friday, Sept. 6 at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa.
