Red Raiders Host College of Saint Mary This Weekend

Game Time...Northwestern College vies for its second consecutive win in GPAC play as they play host to College of Saint Mary on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 2pm. With its win over Mount Marty on Wednesday night, Northwestern moved up to fifth in the current GPAC standings with a 5-6 record, 13-6 overall. The Flames are in ninth place in the GPAC with a 1-9 record, 5-12 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern is 8-4 all-time against the Flames and earned an 81-65 road win over CSM on Dec. 3.

Last Time vs CSM...

Haley Birks scored a career-high 28 points in leading Northwestern College to an 81-65 road win over College of Saint Mary in a conference match-up played in today in Omaha, Neb. 

Birks shot 9-for-13 from the field and converted all nine of her free throw attempts en route to a new career high. She also pulled down six rebounds and had two steals. Darbi Gustafson recorded her third straight double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 7-of-13 from the field. Chanda Zomermaand scored 15 points coming off the Red Raiders bench, draining a trio of three-pointers. 

How It Happened...

Northwestern outscored the Flames 23-15 in the first quarter and limited the hosts to just 25% from the field en route to a 46-27 halftime lead.

By the Numbers...

Northwestern shot 45% for the game and a season-best 60% (6-for-10) from beyond the arc; the Red Raiders made 25-of-28 free throws while CSM went just 6-for-11 from the field

The Red Raiders were outrebounded by one, 40-39

Birks scored in double figures for the ninth time this season; this was her third 20+-point game of the year

Gustafson has scored in double figures in four straight and six overall games; the sophomore has five double-doubles

Renee Maneman dished out six assists and pulled down seven boards

Scouting Report:

College of Saint Mary Flames: 1-9 (9th), 5-12  Head Coach-Jesse Flanagan (2nd year)

The Flames have dropped two straight games and bring a 1-9 league record, 5-12 overall into Saturday's match-up. After earning wins over Oklahoma Wesleyan, Bellevue and Dordt, they have lost to both Doane (83-76-OT) and Hastings (62-43) in league play. CSM also own wins over Peru State and Bellevue at the start of the season before losing 10 in a row.

Flanagan returns four starters and six players from last year's team that finished tied with Northwestern for seventh place in the GPAC with a 10-12 record, 16-14 overall. The Flames did lose the GPAC player of the year and All-American, DeAundra Young, to graduation.

The Red Raiders have won four of their last five games to climb into the top 25 for the first time this season. Ranked No. 25, Northwestern is in fifth place in the GPAC just over halfway through the conference schedule.

Northwestern is third in the GPAC in points per game (78) and ranks seventh in the NAIA in field goal percentage (46%).

The Red Raiders are the second best rebounding team in the conference (+6) and have won the boards battle in five straight games

Kassidy De Jong leads Northwestern in scoring (21ppg) and is shooting 50% from the field, 36% from the 3pt line

Haley Birks ranks sixth in the GPAC in scoring (14.7ppg), second in field goal percentage (52%) and second in blocked shots (26)

Darbi Gustafson has scored in double figures in 11 consecutive games and leads the GPAC with seven double-doubles; Gustafson averages 13ppg (9th in GPAC) and 8.9 (2nd) rebounds per game
