Red Raiders Come Up Short In GPAC Quarterfinals

Northwestern College lost to No.14 Mount Marty 75-67 in the GPAC Quarterfinals played tonight in Yankton, S.D. The Red Raiders season comes to a close with a 15-14 overall record. 

How It Happened...

Northwestern fell behind by five early but used an 11-3 run, capped by a Katy Kuiper three-pointer, to pull ahead 18-15 with a minute left in the first quarter. A basket by Lancers' guard Alex Kneeland made it a one point game at quarters' end, 18-17. 

Mount Marty grabbed the lead back early in the second quarter but a three-pointer by Paige Danner put NWC in front, 25-23, at the seven-minute mark. 

A basket by Sammy Kasowski tied the game for the fourth time, 27-27, but the Red Raiders scored the next four points, on two free throws by Kassidy De Jong and a basket by Renee Maneman, to take the lead back.

Northwestern led by three at the half, 39-36. 

The lead switched hands seven times over the first four minutes of the second half as the teams traded baskets. 

Down one (47-46), Northwestern began a 9-2 run, capped by baskets by De Jong and Arianne Gesell, to take its largest lead, 55-49, with four minutes left in the third. 

Mount Marty, however, closed on a 10-2 run, and following a basket by Kneeland just before the horn, seized the lead for good by the end of the third quarter, 59-57. 

The Lancers pushed their lead to six before Northwestern made one last rally to get within one (68-67) after a floater by De Jong with 2:17 left, but this was the final basket for the Red Raiders. 

Kneeland knocked down her fifth three-pointer with one minute left, giving the Lancers a four-point lead, and Mount Marty held off Northwestern, 75-67.

By the Numbers...

Northwestern shot 50% in the first half but struggled to 31% in the second half, 40% for the game. 

The Red Raiders finished 5-for-20 from the three-point line, going 5-for-10 in the first half, 0-10 in the second.

Kassidy De Jong scored a team-high 23 points; reaching double figures for the 25th time this season.

Arianne Gesell closed her career with her fourth double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. 

Both Katy Kuiper and Renee  Maneman scored eight points and dished out four assists.

Northwestern was outrebounded by the Lancers 44-40.

Alex Kneeland scored a game-high 32 points and Raquel Sutera had a double-doubles with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Mount Marty shot 42% for the game, 48% in the second half. 

This marks the final game for the four Northwestern seniors: Arianne Gesell, Katy Kuiper, Whitney Vander Maten and Morgan VanDerSloot.
