Red Raiders Face Briar Cliff In GPAC Quarterfinals

Game Time...Northwestern College travels to Sioux City, Iowa, to play 17th-ranked Briar Cliff in the GPAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday night, Feb. 25. Tip-off at the Newman Flanagan Center is scheduled for 6pm. Northwestern finished fifth in the GPAC with an 11-9 record and is the #5 seed in the eight-team GPAC postseason tournament at 17-11. The Chargers placed fourth in the GPAC with a 14-6 league record, earning the #4 seed and are 22-8 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 50-32, dating back to the 1977 season, and is 6-4 over the last 10 match-ups.

This Year...The Red Raiders are 0-2 against Briar Cliff this season, losing 76-61 at home on Dec. 10 again on Feb. 4 by the score of 73-63.

Looking at the numbers over the two games, Northwestern averaged 62 points and shot 35% from the field in the two games against BCU. They struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 22% (10-for-45). Karen Ettleman has averaged 17 points and 6.5 rebounds against BCU while Paige O'Neal averages 11.5 points. 

Briar Cliff has averaged 74.5 points in the two wins over Northwestern, shooting 41% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc. Jessi Corrick has led BCU in scoring against NWC, averaging 21 points, followed closely by Kaylee Blake at 18 points per game.

Briar Cliff News and Notes...The Chargers closed the regular season winning six of their last seven games, only losing to top-ranked Morningside at home, 75-66. Briar Cliff finished fourth in the GPAC with a 14-6 record, losing twice to the teams that finsihed ahead of them in the standings, Morningside, Concordia and Hastings. BCU is 22-8 overall. 

Mike Power is in his 15th overall and ninth straight season as the Chargers head coach, having also served in the role from 19998. Already the winningest coach in the program's history, Power is closing in on 300 wins. He guided the Chargers to a seventh place finish last year, ending with a 14-17 overall record. Power returns nearly everyone off last year's roster. 

Briar Cliff averages 71 points per game and is one of the top shooting teams in the GPAC at 43%. They are making five three-pointers per game, shooting 30% from beyond the arc. One of the top defensive teams in the conference, the Chargers are giving up just 63 points per game.

Jessi Corrick is one of three Chargers' players averaging in double figures, scoring 12.7 points per game. Corrick is tied for the team lead with 21 three-pointers. Slone Masters scores 12 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (7), blocks (33) and steals (66). Kaylee Blake scores 10.7 points per game and leads the team in field goal percentage (50%).

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders went 3-2 over their final five games to finish alone in fifth place in the GPAC with an 11-9 record, 17-11 overall. Northwestern defeated Doane, Dakota Wesleyan and Dordt while losing to #3 Concordia and #11 Hastings. They are the fifth seed in the eight team postseason tournament.

Northwestern ranks fourth in the GPAC in scoring (75ppg) and leads the conference in field goal percentage (44%), ranking fourth in the NAIA. Defensively, the Red Raiders are giving up 71 points per game and own a +3 edge on the boards.

Karen Ettleman leads the GPAC in scoring at 22 points per game, fifth best in the NAIA. Ettleman also leads the team in rebounding (5.8) and steals (50). She ranks eighth all-time in career scoring with 1,748 points. Paige O'Neal is the only other NWC player averaging in double figures at 12.4 points per game. O'Neal ranks second in the GPAC in assists (5.1 per game) and ranks in the top five all-time with 461 career assists. Arianne Gesell scores 8.8 points per game and Morgan VanDerSloot averages 6.9 points per game, leading the team with 34 three-pointers.

Up Next...The winner will face the winner of the #1 Morningside vs #8 Dakota Wesleyan game in the GPAC semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 28.
