O'Neal's Career Night Lifts Raiders Past Mount Marty

Paige O'Neal poured in a career-high 36 points in leading Northwestern to an 82-73 win over Mount Marty tonight at the Bultman Center. The win improves the Red Raiders to 7-6 in the GPAC, 13-8 overall.

Down seven early in the second half, Northwestern went on an 18-3 run over a five minute stretch to take control of the game. Back-to-back lay-ups by Arianne Gesell got the decisive run underway and O'Neal closed it with a three-pointer, giving NWC a 52-44 advantage.

O'Neal scored the next eight Red Raider points as the hosts extended its lead to 13 (60-47), holding Mount Marty to just one field goal for a total of 10 minutes.

The Lancers made one final charge behind consecutive three-pointers by Logan Wagner and Raquel Sutera to cut it to six (64-58) but Northwestern put the game away with a final 12-3 run, capped by a lay-up by Renee Maneman with two minutes remaining.

O'Neal went 11-for-18 from the field and a perfect 13-for-13 from the foul line en route to her 36-point effort, matching the highest individual scoring total since Deb Remmerde-Leusink scored 51 against Doane during the 2007-08 season (Becca (Hurley) Kramer scored 36 in a win over William Penn in 2010). O'Neal also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Karen Ettleman chipped in 12 and Gesell added 11 points and six rebounds.

Northwestern shot 47% from the field, 52% in the second half, and held a commanding 44-28 edge on the glass.

The Lancers led throughout most of the first half, opening up their largest lead (31-18) courtesy of a 12-2 run sparked by consecutive three-pointers by April Winne and Alex Kneeland. Northwestern, however, fought back to get within six by the break, scoring the final six points of the half.

Mount Marty shot 44% for the game but was held to just 35% over the final 20 minutes. Kneeland led the Lancers with 20 points and Cassidy Gebhart chipped in 13 points and five assists before fouling out. Mount Marty had its five-game win streak snapped and falls to 7-8 in the GPAC, 16-8 overall.
