Red Raiders Get Tough Road Test At Concordia

Game Time...Northwestern College heads to play its sixth consecutive road game when they play at No. 3 Concordia on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Seward, Neb. Tip-off scheduled for 2pm. Northwestern has won three straight and heads into the weekend with a 4-4 league record, 10-6 overall. Third-ranked Concordia is alone in second place in the GPAC with a 10-1 record, 17-1 overall. All-Time...Northwestern went 2-1 against the Bulldogs last year, winning both home games, one during the regular season and one in the conference tournament. The Red Raiders are 7-3 over the last 10 match-ups but still trail the all-time series against Concordia, 23-29. 

Scouting Concordia...Ranked third in the NAIA, Concordia has won 12 straight games and stands alone in second place in the GPAC with a 10-1 record, 17-1 overall. They are 4-1 against teams ranked in the coaches' poll, defeating Jamestown, Briar Cliff, Hastings and Doane with its only loss to top-ranked Morningside on Nov. 15, 78-70. 

Drew Olson is in his ninth season as the Bulldogs' head coach, becoming the program's winningest coach earlier this season. Olson has guided Concordia to seven national tournaments, including last season where they were upset by Olivet Nazarene in the first round. Concordia ended the season with a 25-8 record and were the GPAC co-regular season champions, along with Northwestern, Hastings and Morningside, with a 16-4 record. Four starters and eight players return from that squad, including two All-Americans.

Concordia ranks third in the NAIA in scoring, averaging 86 points per game, while shooting 43% from the field and 30% from the three-point arc. The Bulldogs are giving up 62 points per game and lead the NAIA with 332 steals and 30 turnovers forced per game. 

Senior Bailey Morris, a first team All-American and reigning GPAC player of the year, leads the team in scoring at 18 points per game. Morris has made 32 three-pointers, is fifth in the NAIA with 86 assists and leads the nation with 82 steals. Fellow senior Tracy Peitz, also an All-American last year, scores 11 points per game and is shooting nearly 60% from the field. Becky Mueller puts in 10.8 points per game and is second on the team with 30 three-pointers. Mueller, Jericca Pearson and Kelsey HIzer all return after earning all-conference honors last year.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have won three straight and four of their last five games to move up to sixth place in the GPAC with a 4-4 league record, one game in back of fifth place Doane. They are 10-6 overall and have defeated Avila, Montana State-Northern and Dakota Wesleyan during its current win streak.

Northwestern averages 76 points per game and is second in the GPAC in field goal percentage (45%). They are giving up 70 points per game and own a +3 rebound margin on the season.

Karen Ettleman leads the GPAC in scoring, averaging 22 points per game, and ranks second in the league in field goal percentage (46%). The senior also leads the team in rebounding (6.2). Paige O'Neal averages 12 points per game and leads the conference in assists (78). Arianne Gesell scores nine points per game while shooting 70% from the field and Morgn VanDerSloot leads the team with 22 three-pointers.

Up Next...Northwestern will play its first home game in over a month as they play host to Dordt College on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 6pm.
