Red Raiders To Face Mount Marty

Game Time...Northwestern College resumes its 2014-15 season as they travel to Yankton, S.D., to play Mount Marty in a conference match-up on Wednesday night, Dec. 3. Tip-off at the Laddie E. Cimpl Arena is scheduled for 6pm. Northwestern is 0-3 in the GPAC, 4-4 overall while the Lancers are 2-2 in conference play, 7-2 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern is 9-1 over the last 10 match-ups against the Lancers, splitting the two games last season. The Red Raiders lead the all-time series 49-20 in a rivalry that dates back to the 1976-77 season.

Scouting Mount Marty...The Lancers have won three straight and five of their last six games for a 2-2 league record, 7-2 overall. They opened the season with wins over Dakota State and Grace (Neb.) but followed with an 87-73 loss to #5 Hastings in league play. Mount Marty then defeated William Penn and Presentation but lost its next conference match-up to Concordia, 63-59, on Nov. 12. Since that setback, the Lancers have wins over Oglala Lakota College, MIdland and Dordt.

Tom Schlimgen is in his seventh overall season as the head coach of the Lancers, guiding Mount Marty to the NAIA D-II National Championship his first season. Schlimgen returns three starters and 10 players off last year's team that finished 10th in the GPAC with a 4-16 record, 13-17 overall.

Mount Marty leads the GPAC in scoring, averaging 83 points per game. They rank fifth in the NAIA with 88 three-pointers, also top among GPAC teams. Defensively, the Lancers are giving up 67 points per game and are a -2 in rebounding on the year.

Junior Alex Kneeland is the Lancers' leading scorer, averaging just over 15 points per game. Kneeland is second in the conference with 27 three-pointers, shooting 41% from beyond the arc. April Winne, a 2013 NAIA All-American and first team all-conference selection, returns after an injury-plagued 2014 season to score 10.2 points per game. Both Holly Hegge and Raquel Sutera, an all-conference pick last year, score 9.9 points per game and Logan Wagner is second on the team with 13 three-pointers, scoring 8.1 points per contest.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are off to an 0-3 start in conference play, losing to a pair of top-five teams (Hastings and Morningside) along with a setback to Doane in the GPAC opener. They are 4-4 overall and have won 2-of-their-last-3 games. Prior to last week's loss to Morningside, Northwestern defeated both Dakota State and Roosevelt.

Northwestern averages 77 points per game, shooting 44% from the field, second best in the GPAC. They are ninth in the GPAC with 41 three-pointers and are fifth in rebounding (+5). Defensively, Northwestern is giving up 70 points per game.

The three-year starter and returning All-American also leads the team in rebounding (5.6) and steals (20). Senior Paige O'Neal puts in 9.3 points per game while ranking second in the GPAC with 40 assists. Arianne Gesell (7.9) and Morgan VanDerSloot (7.3) are the other top scorers for the Red Raiders.
