Red Raiders Host Northwestern Classic

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to three other teams and its own classic this weekend, Nov. 21-22. On Friday, Roosevelt (Ill.) plays Grand View (Iowa) at 6pm, followed by the Red Raiders taking on Dakota State (S.D.) at 8pm. On Saturday, Grand View will play Dakota State at 2pm while the final game will be the Red Raiders going up against Roosevelt at 4pm. All-Time...Northwestern holds an 18-12 lead in the all-time series against Dakota State, winning the last three match-ups against the Lady T's. This will be the first ever match-up between the Red Raiders and Roosevelt.

Scouting Reports...

  Dakota State...The Lady T's are off to a 4-2 start to the season and have won three straight heading into the weekend. DSU lost to Mount Marty in its season debut but then held on to beat Dordt at home 89-87 in its next game. A loss to Marian (Ind.) followed but the Lady T's have since defeated Viterbo (Wis.), Graceland (Iowa) and McPherson (Kan.).

Jeff Dittman is in his 17th overall season in two stints as the Lady T's head coach. He is in his third year back at DSU after serving in the same role at Hastings College for four seasons. Dittman returns two starters and eight players off a 2013-14 squad that finished tied for third in the North Star Athletic Conference with a 3-5 record and 12-20 overall. They were picked to finish fifth in the NSAA preseason poll.

DSU scores 72 points per game, shooting 45% from the field and 28% from beyond the arc. They are +5 in rebound margin and are giving up 69 points per game. Returning starter BreeAna Olson is one of two Lady T's players' averaging in double figures, putting in 12.8 points per game. Sharee Galbraith averages 12.2 points per game while shooting a team-best 58% from the floor. She also leads the team in rebounding at 8.8 boards per game.

  Grand View...The Vikings snapped their five game losing streak last time out, defeating Waldorf 81-59 earlier this week. Grand View improved to 2-5 on the year with its other win a 116-78 home victory over Central Christian (Kan.) in the season opener. They have losses to MidAmerica Nazarene, Northwestern, Dordt, Morningside and Peru State.

Garey Smith is in his 15th season as the head coach of the Vikings and his 33rd overall season as a collegiate coach. He has guided the Vikings to four national tournaments, most recently in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013. Smith returns one starter and five players off last year's team that finished fourth in the Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) with a 5-7 record, 12-14 overall. Grand View was picked to finish fourth out of seven teams in the MCC preseason poll.

The Vikings are scoring 73 points per game, shooting 39% from the field and 30% from the three-point line. Britny Halleland leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per game, as well leading the team with 17 three-pointers. Maddie Westergard averages a double-double with 11.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. She is shooting a team-best 55% from the field. Returning starter Taylor Nashert leads the NAIA with 50 assists.

  Roosevelt...Members of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, Roosevelt is off to a 3-2 start this season. A narrow 55-53 season-opening win over Michigan-Dearborn was followed by consecutive losses to IU East and defending champing Saint Francis (Ind.). They have since defeated Taylor (Ind.) and Trinity International (Ill.) in its conference opener.

Robyn Scherr-Wells is in her fifth season as the Lakers head coach, leading her team to back-to-back NAIA D-II tournaments. Named CCAC coach of the year, Scherr-Wells guided her team to a school-record 28 wins in 2012-13, reaching the national quarterfinals. Last year, Roosevelt finished fifth in the conference (12-6) and 21-11 overall, falling to the University of Jamestown in the first round of the national tournament. One starter and six players return from last year's squad.

Roosevelt is scoring 72 points per game, shooting 39% from the field. They own a +2 rebound edge and are 10th in the NAIA with 25 blocks. Returning starter Becky Williford is one of four players scoring in double figures, averaging a team-best 13 points per game. Lauren Brower scores 12 points per game and lead the team with 11 three-pointers. Freshmen Jasmine Kyler (11.6) and Paige Gallimore (10.8) also score in double figures.

Northwestern News and Notes...Ranked 15th in the NAIA D-II preseason coaches, Northwestern heads into the weekend with a 2-3 overall record, 0-2 in league play. The Red Raiders defeated Grand View and Grace (Neb.) in its first two games but has dropped its next  three, two of which were to top 10 teams.

Northwestern averages 82 points per game and leads the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 47% from the floor. They also rank first in the GPAC in three-point percentage (41%) and are second in rebounding (+10). 

Karen Ettleman is the Red Raiders leading scorer, averaging nearly 27 points per game, fifth most in the NAIA. The senior has scored 1,267 points in her career (11.8 per game) and is shooting 50% from the field this year. Paige O'Neal averages 9.8 points per game and leads the team in both rebounding (5.2) and assists (25). Renee Maneman chips in 8.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and both Morgan VanDerSloot and Shelby Reed are tied for the team lead with seven three-pointers. 

Up Next...Northwestern resumes conference play as the Red Raiders head to Sioux City, Iowa to play #2 Morningside on Tuesday night, Nov. 25.
