Scouting College of Saint Mary...Ranked eighth in the NAIA D-II preseason coaches' poll, College of Saint Mary is off to a perfect 6-0 start this season. The Flames have wins over Presentation, Grace, Tabor, Sterling, Bethany and Midland. Members of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Flames will join the GPAC next year.
Chuck Brewer returns for his seventh season on the Flames' bench and has guided his teams to three consecutive NAIA D-II National Tournaments. Last year, CSM won both the MCAC regular season and postseason titles, going 13-1 in conference play. They lost to Morningside in the second round of the national tournament to end the year at 27-6 and ranked 11th in the final coaches' poll. Three starters and six players return from last year's squad.
College of Saint Mary is averaging 79 points per game, shooting 46% from the field and 31% from beyond the arc. They have a +10 advantage on the boards, pulling down 81 offensive rebounds per game.
Deaundra Young returns to the Flames' starting line-up after earning first team NAIA All-American and conference player of the year honors. Young is shooting nearly 60% from the field, averaging a team-best 18.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She is seventh in the NAIA with 13 blocks. Tiffany Anzalone returns as a starter and scores 15.3 points per game. Tiffani Lewis also returns as a starter and averages 10.2 points per game. Peyton Hagen leads the team with 12 three-pointers, shooting 48% from beyond the arc.
Northwestern News and Notes...After a 2-0 start, Northwestern dropped its next two games, both in conference play, to fall to 2-2 on the year. Wins over Grand View and Grace in the first week of the year were followed by losses to Doane and #5 Hastings.
Northwestern is scoring 83 points per game while shooting 47% from the field and 40% from the three-point line. Like Wednesday's opponent, Northwestern has owned a big advantage on the glass, registering a +9 margin over its opponents.
Karen Hutson leads the team in scoring, averaging 27 points per game. She has scored 20-or-more points in all four games and is shooting 51% from the field. Paige O'Neal scores 10 points per game and leads the team with 21 assists. Morgan VanDerSloot scores 7.5 points per game and leads the team with six three-pointers. Whitney Vander Maten (7.3) and Arianne Gesell (6.8) are the other top scorers.
