Ranked Teams To Play In GPAC Showdown

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Hastings in a GPAC match-up between ranked teams. Tip-off at the Bultman Center scheduled for 2pm. Northwestern, ranked 15th in the NAIA, is 0-1 in the conference, 2-1 overall. Hastings, ranked fifth in the NAIA preseason poll, is 1-0 in GPAC play, 3-1 overall. All-Time...Northwestern is 21-27 all-time against the Broncos but has won three straight in the rivalry. The Red Raiders are 7-3 over the last 10 games, dating back to the 2011 season.

Scouting Hastings...After losing its first game of the season to Southwestern (Kan.), the fifth-ranked Broncos have won three straight games, defeating Mount Marty, College of the Ozarks (Mo.) and John Brown (Ark.).

Carrie Hofstetter returns for her third season as the head coach of the Broncos, earning GPAC coach of the year honors last season. She led Hastings to the co-regular season title in 2014, along with Northwestern, Morningside and Concordia, and to to the NAIA quarterfinals where they lost to Davenport (Mich.) to end the year at 28-6. Two starters and six players return off last year's squad.

Hastings averages 78 points per game and is shooting 45% from the field and 32% from beyond the arc. They are fourth in the GPAC in rebounding, owning a +6 advantage on the boards.

Jamie Van Kirk leads the GPAC in scoring, averaging nearly 27 points per game, third most in the NAIA. She is shooting 48% from the field and is tied for the team lead with nine three-pointers. Michaela Barry averages 13.5 points per game, and, like Van Kirk, has nine three-pointers, shooting 41% from the three-point arc. Teeka Thompson averages 8.3 points coming off the Broncos bench. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are off to a 2-1 start to the season and are seeking their first GPAC win of the year on Saturday. Last time out, Northwestern lost to Doane in its GPAC opener played Tuesday night. 

Northwestern leads the conference in scoring (88ppg), field goal percentage (48%) and three-point percentage (47%), making seven three-pointers per game.

Karen Ettleman is second in the league in scoring, averaging 27 points per game. The senior has scored 20-or-more points each game and is shooting 48% from the field. Paige O'Neal scores 10.3 points per game and leads the GPAC with 19 assists. Whitney VanderMaten scores nine points per game and ranks fourth in the GPAC in three-point percentage (46%). Morgan VanDerSloot scores 8.7 points per game and is second in the GPAC with a 55% three-point percentage.

Up Next...Northwestern will head to Omaha, Neb. to play #8 College of Saint Mary on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6pm.
