Game Time...15th-ranked Northwestern travels to Omaha, Neb. to play Grace University in a non-conference match-up on Friday, Nov. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm. The Red Raiders own a 1-0 record while Grace is 0-2 so far this season.
All-Time...Northwestern won the only previous match-up between the two teams, defeating Grace 109-21 in Orange City, Iowa, last season.
Scouting Grace...A member of the NCCAA Division II classification, Grace enters the weekend with an 0-2 record. They lost to Mount Marty (105-40) in their season opener and to #8 College of Saint Mary (Neb.) last weekend 92-57.
Shawn Kliewer begins his sixth season as the head coach of the Royals and has guided them to two national tournaments (2011 and 2012) during his tenure. He returns three starters and seven players off a 2013-14 team that finished 2-8 in conference play, 5-21 overall. They lost to Central Christian College of the Bible (Mo.) in the first round of the regional tournament to end the season.
Grace has averaged 48.5 points in two games played this season, shooting 32% from the floor and 26% from the three-point arc. They have been outrebounded 53-32 in their two games.
Freshman Karen Orozco is the Royals' top scorer, pouring in 11 points per game. She also leads the team in three-pointers (5) and rebounds (5.5). Another freshman, Julia Schnell, scores 8.5 points per game and has dished out a team-high five assists. Natasha Carver, a junior transfer from Labette Community College, chips in 7.5 points per game.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders opened their season with a 92-64 home win over Grand View on Wednesday night in non-conference play. Three players scored in double figures, led by Karen Ettleman with 30 points. Whitney Vander Maten scored 13, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and Paige O'Neal recorded the first double-double of her career with 12 points and 11 assists.
Northwestern was picked to finish fourth in the GPAC preseason poll, behind conference favorite Morningside, Hastings and Concordia. The Red Raiders are ranked 15th in the NAIA preseason poll.
The Red Raiders shot 55% in the win over Grand View and an even better 62% (8-for-13) from the three-point arc. They outrebounded the Vikings 52-35 and pulled down 13 offensive boards.
Ettleman needs just two more points to pass Missy Van Klompenburg for 22nd all-time and is 14 away from tying Val Kleinjan for 21st place (1,178 points). Ettleman has averaged 11.3 points over the course of her career. O'Neal has averaged 4.6 points and 4.4 assists over the course of her career, shooting 43% from the field.
