Game Time...Northwestern College will make its 2014-15 season debut on Wednesday, Nov. 5 when they play host to Grand View University. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 5:30pm. Northwestern is ranked 15th in the NAIA Division II Preseason Coaches' poll and returns two starters off last year's team that finished 29-5 overall. Grand View comes into Wednesday night's contest with a 1-1 record. All-Time...Northwestern is 6-10 all-time against Grand View but has won the last four match-ups against the Vikings, including an 84-69 road win last year.
Scouting Grand View..The Vikings are off to a 1-1 start to the 2014-15 season, splitting games played at their own classic last weekend. Grand View opened with a 116-78 win over Central Christian (Kan.) on Friday night but followed with a 93-65 loss to #16 MidAmerica Nazarene (in NAIA D-I) on Saturday.
Garey Smith is in his 15th season as the head coach of the Vikings and his 33rd overall season as a collegiate coach. Smith spent 18 years as a coach for William Penn prior to coming to Grand View. He has guided the Vikings to four national tournaments, most recently in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013. Smith returns one starter and five players off last year's team that finished fourth in the Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) with a 5-7 record, 12-14 overall. Grand View was picked to finish fourth out of seven teams in the MCC preseason poll.
Grand View is averaging over 90 points per game, shooting 42% from the field and 29% from the three-point line. The Vikings are giving up 86ppg and opponents are shooting 34% from the field.
Britny Halleland leads the team in scoring, averaging 25.5 points per game. The junior guard was named to the all-tournament team last weekend and also earned MCC player of the week honors. Halleland leads the team with five three-pointers, shooting 50% from the three-point arc. Maddie Westergard scores 14.5 points per game leads the team with nine boards per game. Brittany Bryan, Taylor Bianchi and Taylor Nashert all score 8.5 points per game. Nashert, the lone returning starter, leads the team with 16 assists.
Northwestern News and Notes...Ranked 15th in the NAIA D-II preseason coaches' poll, Northwestern is set to make its season debut Wednesday night. The Red Raiders are one of four teams from the GPAC to be ranked in the top 25 while a fifth conference team, Briar Cliff, earned votes.
Chris Yaw begins his fourth season as the head coach of the Red Raiders and his 11th overall season with the women's basketball program. Named the NAIA Phyllis Holmes Coach of the Year after leading Northwestern to the 2012 NAIA Division II national championship, Yaw owns a 83-20 record in his three years at NWC. He returns two starters and six letterwinners off a 2013-14 team that won a share of the GPAC regular season title (with three other teams) and proceeded to win the postseason title. They finished with a 29-5 overall record after losing to College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in the national quarterfinals.
Last year, Northwestern was one of the top scoring teams in the NAIA, averaging 88 points per game. They led the GPAC in field goal percentage (47%) and were also among the nation's best in rebounding (+10). Karen Ettleman returns for her senior year and is the top scorer coming back for NWC. Ettleman, a first team all-conference selection and WBCA All-American, averaged 16.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and nearly three assists last year. Senior Paige O'Neal also returns as a starter for Coach Yaw after leading the GPAC with 182 assists and scoring 5.7 points per game. Junior Whitney VanderMaten scored nearly six points per game coming off the Red Raider bench, shooting 36% from beyond the arc with 23 three-pointers. Both Morgan VanDerSloot and Arianne Gesell averaged 4.1 points per game last year and return for their junior year.
Up Next...Northwestern heads to Omaha, Neb. to play Grace University in a non-conference match-up on Friday night, Nov. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
