Red Raiders Host Briar Cliff

Game Time...Third-ranked Northwestern College plays host to Briar Cliff in a key GPAC women's basketball match-up on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 6pm. Northwestern is currently tied for first in the GPAC with a 12-2 record, 20-2 overall. Briar Cliff is currently in seventh place in the GPAC with a 6-8 record, 13-11 overall. Game Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 48-30 and is 8-2 over the last 10 match-ups against BCU. 

Last Time vs Briar Cliff...Karen Hutson scored a career-high 33 points in leading Northwestern to an impressive 114-81 victory over Briar Cliff in an early season match-up played on Nov. 12 in Sioux City, Iowa. 

Leading by four (26-22), Northwestern closed the first half on a 39-14 run over the final 10 minutes to lead 65-36 at the break. The Red Raiders held BCU without a field goal over the final three minutes. 

Northwestern put the game away with a 16-3 run at the start of the second half and led by 30-or-more the rest of the way en route to its highest scoring output of the season. 

The Red Raiders shot 52% for the game, 40% (6-for-15) from beyond the arc. Hutson went 11-for-15 from the field and 11-for-13 from the free throw line. Alli Engebretson added 24 points, making 5-of-7 three-pointers. Samantha Kleinsasser recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and Paige O'Neal added 11 points and eight assists. Northwestern held a 54-33 edge on the boards.

Briar Cliff shot 37% for the game and was led by Kaylee Blake with 21 points. The teams combined for 65 fouls and 85 free throws. 

Scouting BCU...The Chargers are in seventh place in the GPAC with a 6-8 record, 13-11 overall. They have lost three of their last four games, however, falling to Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings before earning an 88-70 win over Dordt last time out. 

Mike Power begins his sixth consecutive and 13th overall season as the Chargers' head coach. He is 234-164 all-time and has guided BCU to five national tournaments during his tenure, including three national semifinal appearances. Last year, Briar Cliff finished fourth in the GPAC with a 13-7 record and qualified for the national tournament where they lost to Indiana Wesleyan in the quarterfinals to finish 25-10. Two starters and 11 players return off last year's squad. 

Briar Cliff averages 80 points per game and shoots 41% from the field, ranking fourth in both stat categories. They give up 80 points per game on the defensive end but rank fourth in the NAIA with 329 steals. 

Junior guard Slone Masters leads a balanced Chargers' offense, averaging 15.3 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game. She is second on the team with 20 three-pointers and ranks in the GPAC's top five in both steals (66) and blocked shots (31). Freshman Kaylee Blake is scoring just over 10 points per game while five other BCU players average between 6-8 points per game. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are currently tied with #5 Hastings for first in the GPAC with a 12-2 league record. Northwestern slipped one spot to third in this week's NAIA D-II coaches' poll, behind undefeated and top-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) and #2 Davenport (Mich.). They are 20-2 overall, making this the ninth straight year with 20-or-more wins. 

Northwestern ranks second in the NAIA in scoring (91.5) while also being among the top teams in the NAIA in field goal percentage (48%), three-point percentage (36%), free throw percentage (76%) and rebounding (+11). Defensively, the Red Raiders are giving up 69 points per game and rank second in field goal percentage (38%). 

Alli Engebretson leads the GPAC in scoring (18.6ppg) and has scored in double figures in all but one game this season. The senior is ninth in the NAIA with 68 three-pointers and is fourth in the GPAC in rebounding (7.5). Karen Hutson averages 17.6 points per game, second best in the conference, and leads the GPAC in field goal percentage (57%). Samantha Kleinsasser ranks in the GPAC's top 10 in both scoring (16.2-5th) and rebounding (7.5-3rd) while leading the team with 36 blocked shots. Mackenzie Small (12.5ppg) and Paige O'Neal (6.2) are the other top scorers for NWC.
