Red Raiders Upset By Mount Marty

Northwestern was outscored 9-4 over the final 2-plus minutes in losing to Mount Marty 78-74 in Yankton, S.D. The Red Raiders suffered just its second loss of the season, falling into a first place tie in the GPAC standings with Hastings at 11-2. They are 19-2 overall.

Alli Engebretson knocked down a three-pointer to cap a 14-7 run and tie the game at 35 heading into halftime. The Lancers had led by as much as seven at two different times in the opening period.

The second half was tight the entire way with neither team owning larger than a four-point lead until the very end. Trailing by three (69-66), a free throw by Karen Hutson followed by another three-pointer by Engebretson gave the lead back to Northwestern for the final time, 70-69. It was the 10th time the lead switched hands in the final half.

An old fashioned three-point play by Cassidy Gebhart put the Lancers up for good with two minutes left and following a couple of misses by NWC, Holly Hegge made it a two possession game with a lay-up at the one-minute mark.

Hutson answered with a lay-up to cut the hosts lead down to two (74-72) and after a Lancers miss, Northwestern rebounded and had a chance to tie. Hutson missed on a jumper with 30 seconds left and Mount Marty secured the rebound, forcing NWC to foul. Gebhart and Logan Wagner both converted a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the Red Raiders fate.

Northwestern shot 44% for the game but struggled from the three-point line, making 5-of-20 attempts. Hutson tallied 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the loss before fouling out with 30 seconds left to go. Samantha Kleinsasser also scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Engebretson registered her eighth double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.

Mount Marty shot 45% for the game and was led by Wagner with 24 points, going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Hegge added 13 points and three other Lancer players had 10 points.

Northwestern held the advantage on the boards, 41-33, but committed 20 turnovers. They will head to Fremont, Neb., to play Midland on Saturday.
