Red Raiders Stay Unbeaten With Win Over Mount Marty

A balanced scoring effort led second-ranked Northwestern to an 87-71 win over Mount Marty in a GPAC women's basketball match-up played tonight in the Bultman Center. 

Samantha Kleinsasser registered her seventh double-double of the season, leading Northwestern with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The senior made 9-of-15 field goal attempts and went a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Mackenzie Small recorded the first double-double of her career with 15 points and 10 boards, knocking down a career-best five three-pointers. 

The host Red Raiders fell behind by as much as nine early, trailing 15-6 after a three-pointer by Raquel Sutera. Northwestern capped an 11-2 run with an Alli Engebretson lay-up to come back and tie it at 17. Mount Marty pushed ahead again by six (28-22) but Northwestern went ahead for the first time after a 12-5 run on a basket by Kleinsasser. The Red Raiders led by five (44-39) at the break. 

A three-pointer by Small stretched the lead to 52-39 and a put-back by Kleinsasser gave Northwestern a 15-point lead, 60-45, with 12-minutes to go. The Lancers made one final charge and were within eight (63-55) but Northwestern pushed the lead back to double-digits the rest of the way. 

Northwestern shot 45% for the game and put five players in double figures. In addition to Kleinsasser and Small, Karen Hutson put in 18, followed by Alli Engebretson (17) and Cassidy Breon (10). Northwestern held a big advantage on the boards, 55-40, including 20 offensive rebounds. 

Mount Marty shot 34% for the game, led by Sutera with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Cassidy Gebhart put in 18 points and Kelsey Schmidt added 16. 

Northwestern heads to Lincoln, Neb. to play Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2pm.
