Northwestern Hosts Lancers in Women's Basketball

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Mount Marty in a GPAC women's basketball match-up on Wednesday night in Orange City. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 6pm. Northwestern, tied for second in the most recent NAIA Division II Coaches' poll, is 3-0 in the conference, 10-0 overall. Mount Marty is 0-2 in league play, 3-3 overall. All-Time...Northwestern is 48-19 all-time against Mount Marty in a rivalry that dates back to the 1976-77 season. The Red Raiders have won 15 straight against the Lancers, having not lost since the 2006-07 season. 

Scouting Mount Marty...The Lancers are 0-2 in the GPAC and 3-3 overall so far this season. After opening the year with a 3-1 record, they have lost two straight to Midland and Dordt. They have wins over Grace (Neb.), Presentation (S.D.) and Dakota State (S.D.). 

Tom Schlimgen begins his sixth season as the Lancers head coach after a long stint as a successful high school coach. Last year, he guided Mount Marty to a 10-10 league record, tying Dordt and Hastings for sixth place. They lost in the first round of the postseason tournament to end the season with a 17-14 overall record. The Lancers lost six players to graduation off that squad. 

Mount Marty averages 75 points per game, shooting 45% from the floor. Through six games, the Lancers have made 44 three-pointers, shooting at a 33% clip from long range. Defensively, they are giving up 62 points per game and are hold a modest +3 advantage on the boards. 

Freshman Kieran O'Malley is one of four Lancers players scoring in double figures, averaging 11.4 points per game. She ranks second on the team with seven three-pointers. Raquel Sutera scores 10.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (6.0). Kelsey Schmidt leads the team with 10 three-pointers, shooting 44% from beyond the arc. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders moved up five spots in this week's NAIA D-II women's basketball coaches' poll and are tied with St. Francis (Ind.) for second, trailing only defending champion Indiana Wesleyan. Northwestern is 3-0 in the GPAC, 10-0 overall, owning wins over six ranked teams this season. They earned  two first place votes in this week's rating. 

Northwestern boasts the highest scoring offense in the NAIA, averaging 96.4 points per game. They are shooting 49% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc (5.5 per game) while holding an impressive +14 advantage on the boards. Defensively, they are giving up 68 points per game.

Karen Hutson is one of four Red Raider players scoring in double figures, averaging 20.3 points per game. The junior holds one of the top shooting percentages in the NAIA, making 63% of her field goal attempts. Hutson is also second on the team in rebounding (6.2). Alli Engebretson scores 19.4 points per game and leads the team with 32 three-pointers, shooting 44% from beyond the arc. Samantha Kleinsasser scores 15.3 points per game and became the newest member of the 1,000 point club, reaching the milestone in last week's win over Morningside. She averages a team-best 8.7 rebounds per game. Mackenzie Small is putting in 10.2 points per game and is second on the team with 12 three-pointers.
