Red Raiders Host Morningside In Top 10 Match-up

Game Time...Northwestern College hosts Morningside in an early season GPAC women's basketball showdown between top 10 teams. Northwestern, ranked seventh in the NAIA D-II preseason poll, is 2-0 in the GPAC, 9-0 overall. Morningside, ranked third in the preseason poll, is 1-2 in conference play, 6-2 overall. All-Time...Northwestern trails the all-time series 41-26 and is 4-6 over the last 10 games against Morningside. Nine of the last 10 games have been decided by fewer than 10 points.

Morningside News and Notes...Ranked third in the NAIA preseason basketball poll, Morningside opened the season with five straight non-conference wins, defeating Ashford, Olivet Nazarene, AIB, Grand View and William Penn. Two losses to start the conference season followed, falling to Midland and Concordia, but Morningside came back to earn a 76-49 win over Hastings on Saturday. They are 1-2 in the GPAC, 6-2 overall. 

Jamie Sale returns for his 13th season and owns a program-best 77% winning percentage as the Mustangs head coach. Sale has over 320 wins during his tenure, winning three national championships. Last season, Sale guided the Mustangs to both GPAC regular season and postseason titles, finishing with a 17-3 league record. They lost to Indiana Wesleyan in the national semifinal 65-64 to end the year at 31-5. Two starters and 10 players return off last year's squad. 

Morningside ranks third in the GPAC in scoring, averaging nearly 85 points per game. They have 43 three-pointers, shooting 24% from beyond the arc this season. Defensively, the Mustangs lead the conference in steals (144) and force 30 turnovers per game. 

Junior Ashlynn Muhl returns as a starter and leads the Mustangs in both scoring (12.6) and rebounding (8.1) while shooting 58% from the field. Senior Leann Osten, also a returning starter, scores 10 points per game and shares team-high honors with 28 steals. Freshman Lexi Ackerman scores 9.4 points per game, ranks second on the team with seven three-pointers and is tied for the team lead with Osten with 28 steals. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have a 9-0 overall record heading into Tuesday night's match-up. They have five wins over ranked teams, including wins over a pair of NAIA D-I teams last weekend, #8 MidAmerica Nazarene and #12 Benedictine. Northwestern is 2-0 in the GPAC, defeating Briar Cliff and Hastings, both on the road. 

Northwestern leads the GPAC and ranks third in the NAIA in scoring, pouring in 96 points per game. They also rank among the NAIA's best in field goal percentage (49%), assists (175) and rebound margin (+16). Defensively, Northwestern is giving up 66 points per game. 

Karen Hutson leads the GPAC in both scoring (20.7ppg) and field goal percentage (62%). The junior has scored in double figures in every game this season and also pulls down 6.2 rebounds per game, second most on the team. Alli Engebretson scores 19.6 points per game, second most in the GPAC, and ranks second in the NAIA with 28 three-pointers. Samantha Kleinsasser averages 15.4 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game, shooting 55% from the floor. The senior has five double-doubles this season. Cassidy Breon is shooting 50% from the field and scores 9.2 points per game while Paige O'Neal leads the GPAC with 50 assists. 

Up Next...Northwestern will have an eight-day layoff before hosting Mount Marty on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 6pm.
