Northwestern lost its first game in nearly a month as the fourth ranked Red Raiders were defeated by top-ranked Hastings, 83-70, Saturday afternoon in Hastings, Neb. Northwestern dropped to 22-4 overall, 13-13 in the GPAC with two regular season games left to play. With the win, the Broncos captured the GPAC regular season championship, their first since sharing the honor in 2006-07. Hastings broke open a close game with an 11-2 run to close the first half and led 46-32 at intermission. Northwestern battled back to within five (51-46) on a lay-up by Randa Hulstein with 13 minutes to play but the host Broncos pulled away with a 20-5 run and led 71-51 with seven minutes left. The Red Raiders cut it to 10 (70-60) during the closing minutes but suffered their first loss since Jan. 20. Northwestern shot 42% from the field compared to 50% for Hastings. Three Raiders scored in double figures, led by Randa Hulstein with 16 points and 11 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. Kendra DeJong netted 14 points and pulled down five rebounds while Becca Hurley added 13 points, eight rebounds and dished out five assists. Northwestern outrebounded the Broncos 38-31 but committed 20 turnovers compared to 16 by Hastings. The Red Raiders play host to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 6:00 pm.
