Northwestern defeated Waldorf 93-82 in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday night in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders improve to 2-1 overall while the visiting Warriors drop to 0-1. Coach Woudstra's squad went on an 11-2 run early in the first half to turn an 8-8 tie into a 19-10 lead. Waldorf came back and outscored NWC 16-3 to pull ahead 26-22 with under eight minutes left in the first half. Northwestern, however, recovered and outscored Waldorf 23-10 to close the half and led 45-36 at intermission. Freshman Val Kleinjan made her fourth three pointer as time expired in the first half. With the momentum in their favor, the Red Raiders scored the first seven points of the second half to go up 52-36 and enjoyed their biggest lead, 71-49, with 10 minutes left in the game. Waldorf battled back to cut the lead down to eight with 1:38 left but Northwestern put the game away by making its free throws and won, 93-82. Northwestern shot 47% for the game, 50% from beyond the three point line. Four players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Becca Hurley who netted 20 points in her season debut. Hurley, who finished her soccer season last weekend, also grabbed three rebounds and dished out four assists. Kleinjan netted 19 points, including five three pointers and Kami Kuhlmann and Katie Nieuwsma added 14 and 13 points, respectively. NWC dominated the glass, 47-33, led by Kristin Neth who pulled down a career high 13 boards. Waldorf shot 43% from the floor and was led by Rachel Hannam with 21 points. Megan Forster added 18 points and four steals. Northwestern will host #8 Jamestown on Friday night (6:00pm) followed by a home game on Saturday afternoon against Valley City State.
