The Northwestern College womens' basketball team earned its first win of the young 2008-09 season as they defeated Mayville State, 109-74 in the final game of the Tyson Tipoff Classic. The Red Raiders moved to 1-1 on the season.

Coach Woudstra's squad used a 14-0 run to start the game to pull away from the Comets. The Red Raiders continued to roll, leading by as much as 26 late in the first half and by 27, 62-35 at intermission.

Northwestern never was threatened in the second half and held their first 30-point lead with just over two minutes to play.

Five players scored in double figures for the Red Raiders, led once again by Kristin Neth with 26 points on 9-of-21 from the field. Neth also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists. In her second career game as a Red Raider, Val Kleinjan scored 24 points (9-of-12) with two three pointers. Freshmen Kami Kuhlmann (14), Katie Nieuwsma (11) and junior Anna Anderson (10) also were in double figures. It marked career-highs for both Nieuwsma and Anderson. Northwestern dominated the glass (55-39), led by sophomore Allison Hulst with a career-high 12. The Red Raiders shot 55% from the field including 60% in the second half.

Northwestern will host Waldorf on Nov. 5 in its home opener at 7:00 pm.
