Raiders Lose to Briar Cliff in Match-Up of Ranked Teams

A 12-0, late second-half run gave seventh-ranked Briar Cliff an 85-75 win over third-ranked Northwestern in a GPAC women's basketball game played in Sioux City, Iowa. The Red Raiders had their nine-game win streak snapped and dropped to 8-2 in the GPAC, 17-3 overall. Briar Cliff improved to 17-3 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

Northwestern led by six at the half (33-27) but the Chargers quickly erased the lead with a 12-0 run to start the second half. The Red Raiders responded with an 11-3 run and pulled ahead once again. The lead exchanged hands several times over the next few minutes until Northwestern went on a 10-2 run to pull ahead 67-60. Briar Cliff, however, scored 12 straight points once again to pull ahead 72-67 with just over two minutes left to play. Briar Cliff went ahead by nine (78-69) before a basket by Kami Kuhlmann cut the BCU lead to six (81-75). Northwestern did not get any closer, however, and lost by 10 (85-75).

The Red Raiders shot 43% from the field but struggled from the three-point line, making 2-of-13 attempts. Kami Kuhlmann led five Raider players in double figures with 18 points, followed by Kendra DeJong who scored 16. Becca Hurley and Randa Hulstein added 12 points each while Katie Nieuwsma netted 11.

Liz Grider scored a game-high 40 points for Briar Cliff while Morgan Brown added 16.

Northwestern will play host to Midland Lutheran on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2:00 pm.
