Johnson to Play Basketball and Softball at Northwestern College

Shelby Johnson (Akron, Iowa) has signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball and softball careers at Northwestern College.

Johnson is a 5’8” guard who lettered four years while playing for Akron-Westfield High School. She earned first team all-War Eagle Conference Honors after averaging 13.8 points, 6.7 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game her senior year. Johnson also earned all-District accolades as she helped lead her team to a 16-7 record. A member of the National Honor Society and class valedictorian, Johnson plans to major in mathematics at Northwestern. She is the daughter of Kent and Kathy.Johnson

“Shelby is a well-rounded student-athlete who has excelled in multiple sports in high school as well as in the classroom,” commented Head Coach Earl Woudstra. “She is a very intelligent player who does a great job of seeing the floor and finding open teammates. We are excited to have Shelby join us at Northwestern and look forward to the contributions she will make to our athletic programs and to the Northwestern campus.”

Johnson is a four-year letter winner who plays catcher for the Akron-Westfield softball team. She earned third team all-state and first team all-conference honors after she hit .442 last season (2007). Johnson recorded 57 hits which included 11 doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs as she helped lead the Westerners to a second place finish at the state tournament with a 37-3 record.

“Shelby is a great all-round softball player,” commented Head Coach Melanie Mason. “She is a very strong hitter and a solid defensive catcher. We are excited to have her join our program.”
