Northwestern Opens Tourney Play With Impressive Win Over Holy Names

The Red Raiders cruised to a 97-48 win over unranked Holy Names (Calif.) in the opening round of the 2008 NAIA D-II Women's Basketball Tournament. Northwestern improves to 31-2 overall and advances to the second round for the third straight year.

Leading by 13 at halftime, NWC outscored Holy Names 53-17 in the second half, triggered by a 19-0 run to start the half. The Red Raiders limited the Hawks to just 28% from the floor while shooting 45% from the field themselves. Northwestern dominated the glass, 71-34, which has to bee a tournament record for most rebounds in a game.

Debbie Remmerde led all scorers with 30 points, making 6-of-7 three pointers. Amy Larson added 22, including three three pointers. Crystal Algood recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Randa Hulstein scored eight and pulled down a game-high 14 boards. Randa Boekhout scored six points, ripped down seven rebounds and dished out five assists. The senior now has 991 points in her career.

Up next for Coach Woudstra's squad is fifth-seeded Cornerstone (Mich.), who defeated fourth-seeded Sterling (Kan.), 64-55 earlier today. Gametime for the second round game is at 7:30 pm.
