The third ranked Red Raiders defeated Doane in the quarterfinals of the GPAC tournament, 80-70. With the win, Northwestern, seeded second in the postseason tournament, improves to 28-2 overall and will host fourth-ranked Hastings on Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 pm.
With the score tied at nine, Northwestern scored the next nine points to take the lead for good, 18-9. The Red Raiders extended the lead to 10, 33-23, after a 9-3 run late in the first half. NWC led by 12, 47-35, at intermission.
A 7-0 Tiger run early in the second half cut the lead down to 47-42 with 14 minutes left to play. Doane continued their comeback and cut the lead down to two, 60-58, until the Red Raiders scored the next seven points to push the lead back up to nine, 67-58. The Tigers made one more run, closing the gap to just five points in the closing minutes but NWC made their free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
The Red Raiders shot 51% for the game compared to 39% for the Doane Tigers. Four NWC players scored in double figures led by Debbie Remmerde with 22 points. Randa Hulstein and Crystal Algood both recorded a double-double as Hulstein scored 18 points and pulled down 11 boards while Algood scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds. Amy Larson added 13 in the win. Doane was led by Hannah Helman with 20 points while Vanessa Munter and Jackie Knievel both chipped in 12. Mandy Carr and Becca Hurley dished out nine and five assists, respectively, for NWC.
Doane, who was seeded seventh in the GPAC postseason tournament, ends their season with a 17-13 record. The Red Raiders will play third-seeded Hastings on Saturday in the GPAC semifinals on 2:00 pm.
