Red Raiders Take On Doane in GPAC Quarterfinals

Game Time... The third-ranked Red Raiders will begin postseason play as they host seventh-seeded Doane this evening in a GPAC quarterfinal contest. Tipoff for the game will be at 6:00 pm and the winner will move on to the GPAC semifinals on Saturday against either third-seed Hastings or #6 Dakota Wesleyan.

Scouting Report... The Doane Tigers finished league play in seventh place with a 9-9 record, 16-14 overall. They are 2-6 in their last eight games with wins over Midland Lutheran and a 62-52 opening round win in the GPAC postseason tournament. Doane lost to the five top teams during that stretch, Morningside, NWC, Hastings, Concordia, Mount Marty and also lost to Dana.

Doane is sixth in the league averaging 71ppg and third in field goal percentage, 44%. Defensively, the Tigers are giving up 68ppg and teams are shooting 41% from the floor against their defense. They are fifth in rebounding (+3.7) and are ninth in turnovers, averaging 21 per game.

Individually, the Tigers are led by junior guard Lindsay Anderson who is third in the league averaging 18ppg. She also leads the team with 43 three pointers, shooting 33% from beyond the arc. Vanessa Munter, a 5-11 sophomore, averages 9.5ppg and Alissa Holland, a 6-0 senior, averages 8.7ppg and is third in the league with eight rebounds per game.

Last Time Out... Doane defeated 10th-seed USF last Tuesday night in the opening round of the GPAC tournament, 62-52. The Tigers never trailed and led by 11 at the half, 34-23. USF cut the lead down to one, 44-43, with nine minutes left to play before Doane went on a 14-3 run to pull away and earn the win. Lindsay Anderson and Jackie Knievel both scored a team-high 13 points and Knievel ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds. Doane limited the Cougars to just 31% from the floor and held a 50-34 advantage on the glass.

Northwestern closed the regular season with a big 95-53 win over Briar Cliff last Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders led by 25 at the half (49-24) and continued to roll in the second half, leading by as much as 50. NWC shot 56% from the floor, 40% from beyond the arc and held the Chargers to just 36% from the floor. Debbie Remmerde led four Red Raider players in double figures with 27 points while Miranda Boekhout scored a season-high 16 points with 10 assists. Amy Larson added 16 while Randa Hulstein netted 15 points off the bench. Northwestern out-rebounded BCU 53-18, including 17 offensive rebounds.

Red Raider Notes... Northwestern finished the season with a 27-2 overall record and were third in the final NAIA ranking. They were one of three GPAC teams in the top five (Morningside-2, Hastings-4) and Concordia, a fourth GPAC team, was 10th.

The Red Raiders are second in the NAIA averaging 90ppg. They lead the NAIA in field goal percentage (53%), three point percentage (44%) and assists (611). They are eighth in the nation with 244 three pointers and ninth in rebounding (+8). Defensively, Coach Woudstra's squad is giving up 68ppg and lead the GPAC in field goal percentage defense (37%).

Individually, Debbie Remmerde leads the NAIA averaging 30ppg. She also leads the nation in field goal percentage (62%), three pointers, three point percentage and free throw percentage. Remmerde has scored 3,606 points in her career. Amy Larson is fourth in the GPAC averaging 17.6ppg and is seventh in the NAIA with 89 three pointers, shooting 45% from beyond the arc. Randa Hulstein is the third player in double figures at 10ppg and leads the GPAC shooting 68% from the field. Crystal Algood averages 8.5ppg, is third in the league in field goal percentage and seventh in rebounding (7.4). Becca Hurley (8.3ppg) and Miranda Boekhout are the other top scorers for NWC. Boekhout leads the GPAC with 172 assists and has scored 951 points in her career.

Last Meetings Against Doane... This will be the third meeting of the season between the teams with Northwestern coming away with wins in both of the previous contests. Northwestern defeated Doane at home on Jan. 12, 73-59, and recorded an 84-76 come-from-behind win on Feb. 16 in Crete, Neb. In the first meeting, the Red Raiders led 31-24 at the half but the Tigers came back to cut the lead down to two, 34-32. NWC went on a 13-4 run to pull away in the end. Remmerde led all scorers with 29 points while Amy Larson added 19. Doane was led by Anderson with 13 points. In the second game, Northwestern trailed by 17 late in the first half until a 10-2 run cut the lead to 40-31 at intermission. Coach Woudstra's squad outscored Doane 10-0 to start the second half to take their first lead and with the score tied at 69 with three minutes left, the Red Raiders outscored Doane 11-2 to seal the win. Remmerde scored a school record 51 points and Randa Hulstein added 10 off the bench. Vanessa Munter led Doane with 24 points while Anderson and Hannah Helman added 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Next Time Out... The winner of the game will play the winner of the #3 Hastings/#6 Dakota Wesleyan contest on Saturday, March 1. If NWC wins, they will host the semifinal game but if Doane wins, they will travel to either Hastings or Dakota Wesleyan.
