Game Time... The Red Raiders will visit Crete, Neb. to take on Doane College on Saturday, Feb. 16. This will be the second meeting between the two squads and features another GPAC match-up featuring teams in the national rankings. Northwestern is ranked second with a 25-1 mark and are 15-0 in the GPAC. Doane is receiving votes in this week's poll and has a 16-11 overall record, 9-6 in the GPAC. Tipoff for the game will be at 2:00 pm.
Scouting Report... Doane is currently in fifth place in the league with an 9-6 record, one full game in front of sixth place Mount Marty with three games remaining in the regular season. The Tigers are 2-3 in their last five games with wins over USF and Midland Lutheran and losses to Concordia, Dana and Morningside. Doane is coached by Tracee Fairbanks, who is in her ninth season at the Head of the women's basketball program.
The Tigers are led by junior guard Lindsay Anderson who is second in the league averaging 18.7ppg. Anderson, who earned first team all-league honors last season, leads Doane with 38 three pointers, 75 assists and is second in rebounds at 4.8 per game. Both Hannah Helman and Alissa Holland average 9.5ppg this season. Helman, a 5-8 sophomore guard, has 13 three pointers and has dished out 53 assists. Holland, a 6-0 senior post player, leads the GPAC pulling down 8.3rpg and has 28 blocked shots. Amy Fox and Brittany Lurz round out the starting lineup for the Tigers. Fox, a 5-11 junior, averages 5.5ppg and 4.2rpg. A 5-3 freshman guard, Lurz averages 4ppg and has dished out 44 assists. Vanessa Munter, a 5-11sophomore, is sixth in the GPAC in field goal percentage (54%) and averages nine points off the bench.
Last Time Out... Doane snapped a three-game losing streak last Wednesday night as they defeated Midland Lutheran, 80-67. The Tigers started slow, falling behind 11-4 to start the game. Doane rebounded and went on a 21-4 run over the next eight minutes of play to take a ten point lead, 25-15. A 10-1 run to finish out the first half allowed Doane to take a 21 point lead into halftime en route to their ninth league win. The Tigers were paced by Lindsay Anderson's 17 points and six rebounds. Amy Fox came off the bench to post 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting and a game-high seven rebounds. Vanessa Munter chipped in 11 points while Hannah Helman had a career-high eight assists.
The Red Raiders won their 13th straight game as they defeated Dakota Wesleyan at home, 95-74. Northwestern used a 6-0 run to turn a three point lead into a 33-24 advantage in the first half. They also closed the half on a 10-4 to lead 50-36 at halftime. The Red Raiders began the second half with a 22-13 run to pull away from the visiting Tigers. They held their biggest lead, 95-66, with just over a minute left to play. Coach Woudstra's squad shot 66% for the game, including a blistering 70% in the first half. Debbie Remmerde led a balanced Red Raider scoring attack with 25 points, followed by Amy Larson with 18. Crystal Algood added 15 points, a team-high eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Becca Hurley added 11 points off the bench for NWC. Northwestern held a slim, 33-29, advantage on the boards. Miranda Boekhout dished out 12 assists and Mandy Carr added nine.
Red Raider Notes... Northwestern has won 13 straight games and are one of two teams (Morningside) that are undefeated in the GPAC at 15-0. They have been ranked second in the NAIA since the first poll released on Dec. 5. Coach Woudstra's squad leads the GPAC in scoring, averaging over 90ppg. They have scored over 100 points in eight games this season and have reached 90 points in six other games. Individually, Debbie Remmerde and Amy Larson rank first and fourth in the league averaging 30 and 18 points per game. Randa Hulstein, Remmerde, Crystal Algood and Becca Hurley are in the league's top 10 in field goal percentage. Remmerde and Larson rank first and second in three pointers (84, 76)and are both in the top five in three point percentage (54%, 45%). Algood is seventh in the league in rebounds (7.5) and leads the GPAC in blocked shots (79). Miranda Boekhout, who has scored 929 points in her career, leads the league in assists (137) and is fourth in blocked shots (43). Mandy Carr is third in the league with 117 assists and is second all-time at NWC in steals.
