Debbie Remmerde (Rock Valley, Iowa) scored a game-high 23 points, which set the new career NAIA D-II women's basketball and Iowa Collegiate scoring records, in the Red Raiders 80-70 win over Briar Cliff. Northwestern, ranked second in the new NAIA poll, improved to 17-1 overall, 7-0 in the GPAC while BCU falls to 10-11 overall, 4-5 in the GPAC.
Northwestern scored the first six points of the game and led 11-2 early on. They extended the lead to 12, 23-11, before a 5-0 Briar Cliff run cut the deficit to seven with 8:40 to go in the first half. Then, with 8:29 showing on the game clock, Remmerde made a 10-foot fade-away jumper on the left side of the lane for her record-setting basket and became the all-time NAIA D-II women's basketball scoring leader with 3,237 points. The Red Raiders came out firing in the second half as they outscored the host Chargers 12-3 to take their largest lead of the game, 51-30, with 15:00 left to play. BCU, however, came back and cut the lead down to five, 72-67, with four minutes to go. Northwestern recovered and scored the next five points, all from the free throw line, to seal the victory. Remmerde, with the first of two free throws at the 2:55 mark, became the all-time Iowa Collegiate scoring leader, surpassing Cheryl Dreckman's mark (1990) of 3,248 points. Remmerde, who also holds the Iowa girls high school five-player scoring record with 2,756 points, finished the game with a career total of 3,252 points during her four years at Northwestern.
Northwestern shot 52% for the game compared to 43% for BCU. In addition to Remmerde's 23 points, Amy Larson scored 18 followed by Randa Hulstein with 10. The Red Raiders held a 44-26 rebounding advantage, led by Hulstein with eight and both Remmerde and Miranda Boekhout added seven. Boekhout dished out a game-high 10 assists.
The Red Raiders will get the rest of the week off before playing three games in a span of six days next week. They will host Midland Lutheran on Monday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 pm.
