The second-ranked Red Raiders defeated 24th-ranked Doane, 73-59, in a GPAC women's basketball match-up on Saturday afternoon in the Bultman Center. Northwestern improved to 16-1 overall and remain unbeaten in league play at 6-0. The Tigers fall to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the GPAC.
Both teams held the lead during a first half that featured four ties as well. Northwestern went on the game's first big run when, trailing 18-16, they outscored the Tigers 13-2 to go up 29-20 just before the half. Amy Larson scored seven points to spark the Red Raider scoring run.
Leading 31-24 at halftime, Northwestern extended the lead back to nine early in the half before an 8-1 run brought Doane back within two points, 34-32. The Red Raiders, however, responded with a 13-4 run capped off by a pair of Miranda Boekhout free throws to take control of the game, 47-36. Doane did not get closer than five points the rest of the way as the Red Raiders earned their sixth league victory of the season.
Northwestern shot a season-low 39% from the floor, 46% from beyond the arc. They limited the Tigers, however, to just 34% from the field and 20% from the three point line. Debbie Remmerde led both teams with 29 points, just eight shy of breaking the all-time NAIA D-II women's basketball scoring record held by Brittany Smart (3,236). Amy Larson added 19 points while Crystal Algood added nine points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Lindsay Anderson led Doane with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Northwestern will next play Briar Cliff on Jan. 16 in Sioux City, Iowa, in their only game this week.
