Game Time... The second-ranked Red Raiders resume GPAC play as they head north to take on USF in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Tipoff for the women's contest is at 6:00 pm.
Scouting Report... The Cougars of Head Coach Katie Dailey (11th year) are 5-8 overall, 1-3 in the GPAC. Coming into Wednesday's game, USF has lost two straight and four of their last five games. Their lone victory during that stretch is an impressive overtime win over seventh-ranked Dakota State in Madison, S.D., 87-81. The Cougars are led by a talented front-court which features 2006-07 all-league performers, Morgan Campbell and Jenna Kraayenbrink. Campbell, a 5-10 senior, ranks ninth in the GPAC averaging 13 points per game and is shooting 51% from the field. Kraayenbrink, a 6-2 senior who earned second team all-league honors last year, averages 9.3 points per game and ranks third in the GPAC in both rebounding (8.8) and blocks (27). Kristen McMahon, a 5-10 junior, averages 9.8 points per game and ranks fourth in the league shooting 48% from beyond the arc (23/48). Lacey Janzen, a 6-1 freshman, comes off the bench and averages 3.6 points and two rebounds per game.
In the back-court, USF returns senior guard Vanessa Smidt who is averaging 6.8 ppg. She is tied for the team with 23 three pointers this season. Chelsa Baxa, a 5-9 freshman, averages 9.4 points per game and is tied for the team lead with 37 assists. Sophomore Katie Farley averages 4.1 ppg while freshmen Jade Jorgenson (5.1ppg) and Caitlyn Wojahn (4.5ppg) come off the bench for Coach Daley's squad.
Offensively, USF averages 70 points per game and is shooting 41% from the floor. Defensively, the Cougars give up 68 points and team's are shooting 40% from the floor.
Last Time Out... USF began the new year with a 70-66 loss to Dana last Saturday, Jan. 5. The Cougars trailed by 11 points at the half (33-22) and despite outscoring the Vikings 44-37 in the second half, could not complete the comeback bid. USF was led in scoring by Morgan Campbell with 21 points. Both Jenna Kraayenbrink and Chelsa Baxa added 12 points while Kraayenbrink pulled down a team-high nine boards.
The Northwestern College women's basketball team defeated Hastings College this afternoon, 67-63, in a key GPAC match-up featuring a pair of top 15 teams. The Red Raiders trailed by six, 63-57, before they scored the final 10 points of the game to complete the comeback win. Northwestern shot 39% from the field compared to 34% for Hastings. The Red Raiders controlled the glass, however, with a 48-32 advantage. Remmerde led three NWC players in double figures with a game-high 28 points. She went 9/15 from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds. Amy Larson and Randa Hulstein added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Hulstein also grabbed nine rebounds while Crystal Algood recorded nine points and five boards.
Red Raider Notes... Debbie Remmerde is one of three Red Raider players averaging in double figures at 29.3 points per game. She is first in the GPAC in three pointers (57) and free throw percentage (96%) and ranks third in overall field goal percentage (60%). Remmerde has scored 3,172 points in her career and needs just 65 more to break the all-time NAIA D-II women's basketball scoring record held by Brittany Smart of Cedarville (Mich.). Amy Larson averages 18.3 points per game, fourth in the league, and is second in the GPAC with 56 three pointers. Crystal Algood averages 10.2 ppg and is shooting 61% from the field. She also ranks eighth in the GPAC in rebounding (7.5) and first in blocks (45). Miranda Boekhout averages 6.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and is second in the league with 77 assists. Mandy Carr rounds out the starting lineup and averages 6.3 points per game. She is third in the league with 75 assists and is shooting 39% from beyond the arc (11/28). Freshmen Becca Hurley (9ppg) and Morgan Achterhoff (3.7ppg) come off the bench in the NWC back-court for Coach Woudstra's squad. Jenna Koele (3 ppg) and Randa Hulstein (8.2 ppg) come off the bench in the front-court.
Northwestern averages a GPAC best 92 points per game and leads the league in field goal percentage (52%) and three point percentage (44%). Defensively, Coach Woudstra's squad gives up 71 points per game and limits opponents to just 39% from the floor.
