Red Raiders Close Regular Season At Dordt

Game Time...Sixth-ranked Northwestern closes the regular season with a tough road test against Dordt College on Wednesday night, Nov. 3 in Sioux Center, Iowa. First serve of the varsity match is set for 7:30pm. Northwestern clinched the GPAC regular season title and is 15-0 in the conference play, 28-2 overall. All-Time...Northwestern holds a slim 41-36 advantage in the season series (since 1989) and has won eight of the last 10 match-ups against Dordt. The Red Raiders are 18-8 against Dordt during head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch's tenure, including a 3-0 record last year. Four of the last six match-ups have gone five sets. 

Last Time vs the Defenders...Kaitlin Floerchinger put  down a match-high 14 kills in leading Northwestern to a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-18, 25-15) over the Defenders in a match-up between top 25 team played Sept. 23 in Orange City, Iowa. 

The Red Raiders hit. 264 for the match, led by Floerchinger, who hit .591 over the three sets. Haley Chambers put down seven kills and Karlie Schut added six. Northwestern tied its season high with 12 ace serves, four by Schut and two each for Floerchinger, Jillian Estes, Brooke Fessler and Autumn Pluim

Fessler lofted up 26 assists and Alexis Bart added 12 digs.

Dordt hit .074 for the match and was led by Jenna Horstman, Brooke Wolterstorff and Elizabeth Kiel who all had six kills.

Scouting Dordt...The Defenders are tied with Concordia for third place in the GPAC with a 10-5 conference record, 16-10 overall. They are 5-2 over their last seven matches, earning two wins over Dakota Wesleyan and one win over Morningside, Hastings and Doane. Dordt had a pair of five-set losses to Briar Cliff and Concordia during that stretch. 

Chad Hanson is in his fourth season as the Defenders head coach and returns eight players off a 2013 team that finished tied with Hastings for third place in the GPAC at 12-4, 25-9 overall. They qualified for the NAIA National Volleyball Championship, advancing out of pool play before losing to Wayland Baptist (Texas). 

Dordt ranks second in the conference with a .231 hitting percentage, averaging 12.6 kills per set. They are one of the top blocking teams in the NAIA, putting down 2.4 blocks per set, 14th best in the NAIA. Two Defenders rank among the top 10 in the GPAC in kill efficiency, led by sophomore Brooke Wolterstorff at .284. Wolterstorff, an All-American last year, leads the team with 3.1 kills per set and is third on the team with 71 blocks. Freshman Haley Moss ranks 10th in the GPAC with a .256 hitting percentage, averaging 2.3 kills per set. Moss also ranks sixth in the GPAC with 102 blocks. Sophomore Elizabeth Kiel is third in the GPAC in blocks (1.1 per set) and puts down 1.9 kills per set. Kayla Bartman, a third team All-American last year, averages 9.4 assists per set and is hitting .358 on the season.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders secured their second consecutive GPAC Championship with a pair of wins last week over Briar Cliff and Midland. Northwestern, ranked sixth in the NAIA coaches' poll, is 15-0 in conference play and 28-2 overall. They have won 14 straight matches, dating back to a 3-0 loss to #2 Park on Sept. 13. 

Northwestern continues to be the top hitting team in the GPAC, averaging 13.6 kills per set and hitting .276 as a team. They lead the conference with 213 ace serves and are fifth in blocks (2.1). Senior Brooke Fessler directs the Red Raider offense, lofting up 11.1 assists per set and hitting .350 as the team's setter. Kaitlin Floerchinger has hit for double figures in all but three matches and leads the conference with 4.1 kills per set. She ranks second all-time at Northwestern with 233 ace serves and leads the GPAC with 57 this season. Karlie Schut averages 3.1 kills per set and is fourth in the GPAC with 44 ace serves. Haley Chambers is seventh in the league with a .280 kill efficiency, putting down 2.6 kills per set. Alexis Bart is third in the league in digs (4.6). 

Up Next...Northwestern will host a GPAC Quarterfinal match on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7:30pm against an opponent to be determined.
