Red Raiders Host Briar Cliff

Game Time...Sixth-ranked Northwestern goes for its 13th straight win as they play host to Briar Cliff on Wednesday night, Oct. 29, in a GPAC volleyball match-up. First serve of the varsity match is scheduled for 7:30pm in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders are in first place in the GPAC with a 13-0 league record, 26-2 overall. All-Time...Northwestern has won 14 straight match-ups in this rivalry and leads the all-time series 50-10. 

Last Time...Kaitlin Floerchinger put down a match-high 15 kills in leading Northwestern to a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) over Briar Cliff in a GPAC match-up played on Oct. 8 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Northwestern hit .248 in the three-set match, led by Floerchinger with 15 kills and nine digs, hitting .268. Karlie Schut added 13 kills and hit .346. Brooke Fessler lofted up 36 assists and Alexis Bart led all backrow players with 21 digs.

Briar Cliff hit .080 and was led by Rachele Harrill with nine kills and Katelin Langel added eight.

Scouting Briar Cliff...The Chargers have lost two straight and three of their last four matches to fall back into sixth place in the GPAC with a 7-7 record, 18-9 overall. They are one game in back of Nebraska Wesleyan and own a slim 1/2 game lead over both Hastings and Doane with four matches left to play in the regular season. Among their most recent matches, BCU has a win over Dordt and losses to Midland, Concordia and Doane.

Trevor Schirman is in his second season as the head coach of the Chargers' volleyball program. Schirman was a long-time assistant at the University of California-San Diego prior to coming to BCU. He returns four starters off a 2013 team that finished 8-8 in the GPAC and qualified for the NAIA National Championship for just the second time in the history of the program. BCU went 1-2 in pool play, earning its first ever win at the national championship, and ended the year with a 20-17 record. 

Briar Cliff ranks sixth in the GPAC in both kills (12.4) and hitting percentage (.198) while ranking second in digs (16.2). Katelin Langel leads the Chargers in kills, putting down 2.9 per set and hitting .230 on the rightside. Rachele Harrill averages 2.5 kills per set on the leftside and Breanna Nogelmeier averages 2.2 kills per set and leads the team with 105 blocks. Amy Frank is second in the GPAC with 4.9 digs per set and is tied for the team lead with 29 ace serves.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have won 12 straight matches since losing to #2 Park back on Sept. 13 at the Saints Invitational. They have a two-match lead over Midland in the current GPAC regular season standings with a 13-0 record, 26-2 overall. Last week, Northwestern earned three road wins over Morningside, #15 Nebraska Wesleyan and (RV) Hastings. 

Northwestern is the top hitting team in the GPAC, ranking seventh in the NAIA with a .283 kill efficiency. They are 10th in the NAIA in kills per set (13.6) and are eighth in the NAIA with 200 ace serves. 

Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the GPAC with 4.1 kills per set, hitting .271 on the season. The senior has hit for double figures in 24 matches and has 20-or-more kills in six matches this season. Floerchinger leads the GPAC with 55 ace serves. Karlie Schut averages 3.1 kills per set, eighth best in the GPAC, and has reached double figures 16 times, including her last six matches. Schut is second in the GPAC with 43 aces. Brooke Fessler leads the GPAC in assists (11.1) and Payton Samuelson ranks 10th in the league with a team-high 86 blocks.

Up Next...Northwestern will host Midland on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3pm for Senior and Parent's Day.
