Big Weekend Ahead For Red Raider Volleyball

Game Time...Sixth-ranked Northwestern heads on the road to play a pair of matches against ranked teams. On Friday night, the Red Raiders will play 15th-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan (ranked in NCAA D-III poll) at the Snyder Arena in Lincoln, Neb. Northwestern will then head further west to play (RV) Hastings for a Saturday afternoon match in Hastings, Neb. All-Time...Northwestern is 30-3 all-time against Nebraska Wesleyan and is 9-1 over the last 10 match-ups. The Red Raiders are 27-27 all-time against Hastings but have had the edge lately, winning seven of the last 10 match-ups. Both records are since the 1990 season.

Scouting Nebraska Wesleyan...The Prairie Wolves are tied with Briar Cliff for fourth place in the GPAC with a 7-5 record and are 19-5 overall. Ranked 15th in the NCAA D-III poll, NWU is a perfect 12-0 against NCAA D-III teams. They are 4-1 over their last five matches, earning wins over Concordia, Hastings, Morningside and DWU. Their only setback was a 3-1 loss to Midland on Oct. 15.

Rayna Cain is in her third season as the head coach at NWU and returns all but two starters and nine players off a 2013 team that finished fifth in the GPAC with a 10-6 record, 20-8 overall. She served as an assistant at Des Moines Area Community College and as the head coach at Dana College prior to NWU.

Nebraska Wesleyan is third in the GPAC with a .226 kill efficiency, averaging 12.6 kills and 2.3 blocks per set. Alyssa Stanek leads the team with a .287 kill percentage, averaging 2.6 kills and a GPAC-leading 1.5 blocks per set. She earned first team all-GPAC honors last year. Katelyn Walsh, a second team all-conference pick last year, is hitting .278 with 2.9 kills per set. Kelsey Bahe and Alexa Rosenau share the setting duties in the NWU 6-2 offense, lofting up nearly 11 assists per set. Mackenzie Ashton is fifth in the GPAC in digs (4.5) as the teams' libero.

Scouting Hastings...The Broncos are currently in seventh place in the GPAC with a 5-6 record, one game in front of Doane. Hastings is 5-2 over its last seven matches and earned votes in the last NAIA coaches' poll with a 15-9 overall record. They have wins over DWU, Bellevue, Mount Marty, Midland and Concordia but lost to Hastings and Dordt.

Matt Buttermore is in his third season as the Broncos' head coach, taking over in 2012 where he led his team to the GPAC Championship and a #6 ranking. He was a former assistant at Bellevue. Buttermore returns four starters and 10 players off a 2013 squad that finished tied with Dordt for third place in the GPAC with a 12-4 record, 21-12 overall.

Hastings ranks ninth in the GPAC in kills (12.1) and hitting percentage (.166) but is one of the best blocking teams in the NAIA, ranking 13th at 2.4 blocks per set. 

Both Katie Zoucha and Abigayle Preissler rank in the top 10 within the GPAC in kills, averaging 3.3 and 3.1 kills per set, respectively. Zoucha, a two-time all-GPAC pick,  leads the team with 70 blocks and is hitting .227 on the rightside. Preissler has 40 blocks and Jessica Osterhaus, a second team all-GPAC pick last year, is second on the team with 63 blocks. Katie Placke directs the Broncos' offense, lofting up 9.7 assists per set.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have won 10 straight matches and is in first place in the GPAC with an 11-0 league record, 24-2 overall. They have a two-match lead over Midland with five league matches left to play. Northwestern earned the sixth spot in this week's NAIA coaches' poll, a spot they have occupied for the last six polls.

Northwestern continues to lead the GPAC in kills (13.5), hitting percentage (.283) assists (12.2) and ace serves (191), ranking among the NAIA's top 10 in all three categories. They are fifth in blocks and sixth in digs.

Kaitlin Floerchinger is tops among the GPAC in kills per set (4.1) and is hitting .278 as one of the Red Raiders' outside hitters. She has hit for double figures in 22 matches and also ranks sixth in the NAIA with 54 aces. Karlie Schut averages three kills per set, 10th best in the GPAC, and is hitting .245 on the rightside. The junior is second in the GPAC with 41 aces and has 54 blocks. Haley Chambers is sixth in the GPAC with a .278 kill efficiency and averages 2.6 kills per set. Brooke Fessler directs the Red Raider offense, lofting up 11 assists per set. Alexis Bart is third in the GPAC in digs (4.6) and was named the GPAC libero of the week earlier this week for the third time this season. Jillian Estes is seventh in the GPAC with 34 ace serves.
