Red Raiders Host Doane

Game Time...Sixth-ranked Northwestern goes for its ninth straight win as they host Doane on Friday night, Oct. 17 in a GPAC match-up. First serve of the varsity match is scheduled for 7:30pm. Northwestern is in first place in the conference standings with a 9-0 league record, 22-2 overall, while Doane is tied with Nebraska Wesleyan for seventh place in the GPAC at 4-5, 12-13 overall. All-Time...Northwestern has won three straight and is 7-3 over the last 10 match-ups against the Tigers. They hold a 31-18 lead in the all-time series. 

Last Time vs Doane… Northwestern defeated Doane 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) in a conference match-up played on Sept. 19 in Crete, Neb.

 The Red Raiders hit .287 for the match, totaling 45 kills in 108 attempts against just 14 errors. Kaitlin Floerchinger put down 12 kills to lead NWC. Karlie Schut added nine kills and Haley Chambers had eight in 18 attempts. 

Brooke Fessler lofted up 34 assists and put down six kills in eight attempts, hitting .625 for the match. Alexis Bart led the backrow with 14 digs and went perfect in serve receive. 

Doane hit .144 for the match and was led by Shelbi Mlynczak with 16 kills.

Scouting Doane…The Tigers have won three of their last four matches to climb into a seventh place tie with Nebraska Wesleyan at 4-5 in the GPAC, 12-13 overall. They have wins over Dordt, Nebraska Wesleyan and a non-conference win over Grace in the last two weeks. Doane’s only setback was a 3-0 loss at Concordia one week ago.

Gwen Egbert is in her second season as the Tigers' head coach, coming to Doane after an outstanding high school coaching career in the Omaha area. Egbert accumulated 700 wins and six state titles as a high school coach and guided Doane to a seventh place finish in the GPAC in 2013, going 6-10 in the league and 16-18 overall. Six players who saw significant time on the court return from last year's squad but the Tigers lost four players who earned all-conference honors.

Doane ranks ninth in the GPAC in both kills (11.5) and kill efficiency (.166) but ranks second in the league with 171 ace serves. Shelbi Mlynczak is second in the GPAC in kills, averaging 3.4 per set while hitting .200 as one of the Tigers’ outside hitters. Megan Fletcher puts down 2.7  kills per set while middle hitters Breanna Fye and Cassandra Choquette combine for 120 blocks.

Northwestern News and Notes…The Red Raiders have won eight consecutive matches, all within conference play. They are 9-0 in the league and have a full two match lead over second place Midland. Northwestern is 22-2 overall.

Northwestern is the top hitting team in the GPAC, averaging 13.5 kills per set while hitting .279, ninth best in the NAIA. They also lead the conference with 174 ace serves and are fifth in blocks (2.2 per set).

Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the GPAC in kills (4.2) and ace serves (48), hitting .275 on the pins. She ranks second all-time at NWC with 224 career aces. Both Karlie Schut (2.9) and Haley Chambers (2.5) rank in the GPAC’s top 10 in kills per set, hitting .233 and .274, respectively. Brooke Fessler leads the conference with 11.1 assists per set and is hitting over .400 as the team’s setter. Alexis Bart, the career digs leader at Northwestern, leads the team with 4.7 per set and is 97%  in serve receive.
