Northwestern Hosts Dordt In Conference Match-Up

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Dordt in GPAC volleyball match-up between top 20 teams. Northwestern, ranked seventh in the Sept. 16 poll, is 3-0 in the GPAC and 16-2 overall. Dordt is also undefeated in conference play at 3-0, 9-5 overall and is ranked 21st in the Sept. 16 coaches' poll. All-Time...Northwestern holds a slim 40-36 advantage in the season series (since 1989) and has won eight of the last 10 match-ups against Dordt. The Red Raiders are 17-8 against Dordt during head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch's tenure, including a 3-0 record last year. Four of the last five match-ups have gone five sets. 

Scouting the Defenders...Dordt is one of four GPAC teams recognized in the NAIA coaches' top 25 poll, ranked 21st in the Sept. 16 rating. The Defenders are undefeated in the GPAC with a 3-0 record, 9-5 overall. Dordt is 5-3 against teams currently ranked in the top 25, including a 3-2 win over top-ranked Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on August 22. 

Chad Hanson is in his fourth season as the Defenders head coach and returns eight players off a 2013 team that finished tied with Hastings for third place in the GPAC at 12-4, 25-9 overall. They qualified for the NAIA National Volleyball Championship, advancing out of pool play before losing to Wayland Baptist (Texas). 

Dordt is hitting .214 this season, averaging over 12 kills per set. Kayla Bartman returns as the team's setter after earning third team All-American honors in 2013. Bartman averages 1.1 kills, nine assists and over two digs per set. Sophomore Brooke Wolterstorff returns after earning All-American honors and being named the freshman of the year in the conference. Wolterstorff is hitting .236 and puts down three kills per set. Sophomore Elizabeth Kiel ranks fifth in the GPAC with 56 blocks and puts down 1.7 kills pet set, hitting .269. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are one of four conference teams still undefeated in the GPAC, joining Dordt, Nebraska Wesleyan and Midland. They are 3-0 in league play and 16-2 overall, ranked seventh in last week's poll. They are 5-2 against ranked teams this season. 

Northwestern leads the GPAC and ranks seventh in the NAIA in kill efficiency, hitting .278 as a team. They are also fifth in the NAIA with 132 ace serves and are fourth in the GPAC in blocks per set (2.2). 

Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the GPAC in kills, putting down 4.1 per set, and hitting .254 on the outside. The senior All-American leads the NAIA with 43 ace serves and also averages 3.4 digs per set. Junior Karlie Schut averages 2.9 kills per set and hits .233 as the team's rightside hitter. Also a returning All-American, Schut has 34 blocks and is third in the GPAC with 28 ace serves. Haley Chambers ranks eighth in the GPAC in hitting percentage (.267) and puts down 2.6 kills per set. Brooke Fessler leads the GPAC in assists (11.2), ranking fifth in the NAIA. The junior puts down over one kill per set and is hitting .513. Payton Samuelson ranks ninth in the GPAC in blocks (57) and is hitting over .400 as one of the team's middles. Jessica Van Beek has 42 blocks and averages 1.3 kills per set playing opposite Samuelson in the middle. Alexis Bart, the Red Raiders' all-team leader in digs, averages 4.8 digs per set.
