Red Raiders Play Doane on Friday Night

Game Time...Seventh-ranked Northwestern heads on the road for the second straight match as they play Doane on Friday night in Crete, Neb. First serve of the varsity match will be at 7:30pm. Northwestern is 2-0 in the GPAC and 15-2 overall while Doane is 0-2 in conference play, 7-10 overall. All-Time...Northwestern won both match-ups last year and is 8-2 over the last 10 matches against Doane. The Red Raiders lead the all-time series 30-18. 

Doane News and Notes...Doane has an 0-2 league record and is 7-10 overall. They are 2-4 in their last six matches, earning wins over Judson and Saint Ambrose but lost to Hastings, Central Methodist, Viterbo and Concordia. Doane suffered a 3-1 home loss to Concordia Wednesday night.

Gwen Egbert is in her second season as the Tigers' head coach, coming to Doane after an outstanding high school coaching career in the Omaha area. Egbert has 700 wins and six state titles as a high school coach and guided Doane to a seventh place finish in the GPAC in 2013, going 6-10 in the league and 16-18 overall. Six players who saw significant time on the court return from last year's squad but the Tigers lost four players who earned all-conference honors.

Doane averages 11.1 kills and 1.6 blocks per set, hitting .159 for 10th best in the conference. Sophomore Shelbi Mlynczak leads the team in kills, ranking sixth in the GPAC at 3.2 per set. She is hitting .194 and has 14 blocks. Junior Megan Fletcher averages 2.6 kills per set as the other outside hitter and has 28 blocks. Haley Norvell and Rachel Wieser both return at the setter position and combine to loft up over nine assists per set. Julie Els leads the backrow with 4.1 digs per set. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are in a three-way tie for first place in the GPAC with Dordt and Nebraska Wesleyan, all with 2-0 records. They are 15-2 overall and are ranked seventh in the NAIA, the highest among four GPAC teams in the top 25. Northwestern swept Mount Marty 3-0 last time out in Yankton, S.D.

Northwestern leads the GPAC in four statistical categories, including kills per set (13.4), kill efficiency (.278), assists per set (12.3) and aces (128). They rank among the nation's best in kill efficiency (8th) and aces (2nd). 

Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the GPAC with 4.05 kills per set, hitting .257 as one of the Red Raiders' outside hitters. The 2013 GPAC player of the Year and NAIA All-American also leads the NAIA with 39 ace serves and is tied for third all-time with 215 career aces (tied with Kaitlin (Beaver) Hoogeveen). Junior Karlie Schut, also a returning All-American and first team all-conference player, averages 2.9 kills and has 28 ace serves, ranking fifth in the GPAC in the later. Brook Fessler leads the conference in assists (11.21) and is hitting .505 this season, putting down one kill per set. Fessler earned All-American honors last year and averages 2.2 digs per set. Senior Alexis Bart ranks third in the conference in digs (4.8) and became the school's all-time leader in digs last weekend, surpassing Janna (Bloemendaal) Hardersen. Bart has 1,892 career digs and is a two-time all-conference pick. Junior Payton Samuelson is the team's top blocker (53) and is hitting .413 this season.
