Red Raiders To Face Mount Marty Wednesday

Game Time...Northwestern College resumes its conference season as they play Mount Marty in a JV/Varsity double header on Wednesday night, Sept. 17. First serve in Yankton, S.D. of the JV match will be at 6pm, followed by the varsity contest at 7:30pm. The seventh-ranked Red Raiders are 1-0 in the GPAC, 14-2 overall while Mount Marty will be making its conference debut and is 4-6 overall. All-Time...Northwestern has won 26 straight matches and is 34-1 all-time against Mount Marty, dating back to the 1988 season.

Scouting the Lancers...Mount Marty is 4-6 so far this season with all of its matches in non-conference play. They have won three of their last four, however, defeating Presentation (S.D.), Waldorf (Iowa) and Grace (Neb.) before losing to the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) last time out, 3-0. 

Sierra Kloth put down a team-high seven kills in 21 attempts in the Lancers' 3-0 loss to USF on Sept. 11. Individual set scores were 25-11, 25-16 and 25-9. Mount Marty hit .000 (19 kills, 19 errors in 72 attempts) while totaling 39 digs in the backrow. 

Candice Climer is in her fourth season as the Lancers' head coach and returns six starters and a total of 14 players off a 2013 squad that finished 10th in the GPAC with a 2-14 record, 13-20 overall. 

Mount Marty is hitting .153 and averaging 11.5 kills and 1.6 blocks per set. Caitlyn Illg returns as the team's setter, having earned all-conference honors the last two years. Illg lofts up 7.8 assists per set and is second on the team in digs (2.5). Sierra Koth is the Lancers' top hitter, ranking 11th in the GPAC with a .240 kill efficiency and putting down 3.1 kills per set. BreAnne Thege leads the team in the backrow, putting up 4.51 digs per set. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders went 4-1 last week, defeating Morningside in their conference opener and going 3-1 at the Saints (Ashford) Invitational on the weekend. Northwestern won its first three matches at Invite before losing to #12 Park (Mo.) in four sets. The loss ended the Red Raiders win streak at 13 matches and they are 14-2 overall, slipping two spots in this week's NAIA poll.

Northwestern is the top hitting team in the GPAC, leading the league in both kills (13.5) and hitting percentage (.275) where they are also among the leaders in the NAIA. They are second in the nation with 121 ace serves and are 10th in blocks (123.5). 

Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the GPAC in kills (4.2 per set) and aces (38) while hitting .264 on the outside. Haley Chambers puts down 2.6 kills per set playing opposite Floerchinger on the outside. Karlie Schut, the current GPAC player of the week, averages 2.8 kills per set and hits .222 on the rightside. She is second in the GPAC with 27 ace serves. Payton Samuelson (51 blocks) and Jessica Van Beek (39 blocks) average 1.6 and 1.2 kills, respectively. Brooke Fessler ranks fourth in the NAIA in assists (11.4) and is hitting .485 on the year. Alexis Bart is fourth in the GPAC in digs (4.8 per set).

Up Next...Northwestern travels to Crete, Neb. to play Doane on Friday, Sept. 19. JV match at 6pm, followed by the varsity.
