Red Raiders Begin GPAC Play Against Morningside

Game Time...Fifth-ranked Northwestern opens GPAC play against Morningside at home on Wednesday night, Sept. 10. First serve at the Bultman Center of the junior varsity match is slated for 6pm, followed by the junior varsity at 7:30pm. Northwestern has won nine straight matches and is 10-1 overall while Morningside is 10-3. All-Time...Northwestern has won five straight matches in this rivalry and is 20-10 all-time against Morningside. Last year, the Red Raiders went 3-0 against the Mustangs, winning both during the regular season and then again in the GPAC quarterfinals. 

Scouting Morningside...The Mustangs bring a 10-3 record into Wednesday night's match but went 2-2 at the Baker Invitational last weekend. They lost to Graceland (Iowa) and Baker (Kan.) and earned wins over Sterling  (Kan.) and John Brown (Ark.). Prior to that, Morningside had won three straight matches and opened the year with an 8-1 mark, losing only to Kansas Wesleyan. 

Sara Horn is in her fourth season as the Mustangs head coach after serving as the head of the Iowa Central Community College volleyball program two years. Horn was named the GPAC coach of the year after leading Morningside to both the regular and postseason titles after her first year in 2011. Last season, she led the Mustangs to an eighth place finish in the conference with a 4-12 record, 12-17 overall. Six players who played in the regular rotation are back from last yeear.

Morningside is fifth in the GPAC with a .225 hitting percentage, averaging 12.5 kills per set. They lead the GPAC in aces (87) and are eighth in blocks (1.6). 

Gabi French ranks third in the league in kills, averaging 3.6 per set. The junior outside hitter is hitting .175 and is also second on the team in digs (3.1). Senior Kecia Verburg returns in the middle after earning honorable mention all-conference honors last season. Verburg is hitting .370 and puts down 2.6 kills per set to go with 19 blocks. Freshmen Jennifer Buyert (39) and Kelsey Ackerman (20) lead the team in blocks and junior TyAnn Buddenhagen lofts up 8.4 assists per set. Katie Kuck, the current GPAC libero of the week, averages 4.8 digs per set in the backrow. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have won nine straight matches and are 10-1 heading into Wednesday night. Ranked fifth in the NAIA Coaches' poll for the second straight week, Northwestern is one of four GPAC teams in the top 25 and one of six conference teams recognized in the poll. Among their wins, the Red Raiders have victories over five ranked teams.

Northwestern leads the GPAC in kills (13.74) and hitting percentage (.279), ranking 10th in the NAIA in the later. They are fourth in the GPAC in aces (76) and sixth in blocks (1.8). 

Senior Kaitlin Floerchinger leads the GPAC in kills, averaging more than 4.3 per set. She currently is hitting .320 and has recorded 10-or-more kills in every match this season. Floerchinger also is tied for first in the GPAC with 26 ace serves. Haley Chambers averages 2.7 kills and is 11th in the GPAC with a .244 kill efficiency. Brooke Fessler leads the GPAC in assists (11.5) and Alexis Bart leads the backrow with 4.3 digs. 

Up Next...Northwestern will head to the Saints Invitational, hosted by Ashford University, this weekend, beginning with two matches on Friday, Sept. 12.
