Game Time...Fifth-ranked Northwestern plays host to Morningside on Saturday, Nov. 9, in a GPAC volleyball quarterfinal match. First serve scheduled for 8pm. Northwestern is the top seed in the eight-team postseason tournament field, winning the GPAC regular season title with a 16-0 record. They are 32-1 overall. Morningside finished ninth in the GPAC with a 4-12 record and earned the eighth seed with a 12-16 overall mark. All-Time...This will be the 30th match-up between the two teams and Northwestern holds a 19-10 all-time lead in the series. The Red Raiders have won four straight against Morningside, including both matches played this year.
Prior Match-Ups...Northwestern swept the season series against Morningide, earning a 3-1 win on Sept. 20 in Sioux City, Iowa, and then defeating the Mustangs 3-0 Oct. 23.
The Red Raiders hit .281 in the two wins, led by Karlie Schut who has put down a combined 33 kills in the two matches. Kaitlin Floerchinger has 27 kills while hitting nearly .300 against the Mustangs. Brooke Fessler has 82 assists and 20 digs while Claire Roesner has a team-high three ace serves.
Morningside is hitting .123 against Northwestern, led by Gabi French with 21 kills. Maggie Vondrak has 20 kills, hitting .288, and Kecia Verburg has six blocks.
Morningside News and Notes...The Mustangs finished ninth in the GPAC regular season with a 4-12 record, earning the eighth and final spot in the postseason tournament. They are 12-16 overall and have dropped six of their last seven matches. Morningside closed the season with a 3-1 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan and a 3-0 setback to Briar Cliff on Wednesday night.
Sara Horn is in her third season as the head coach of the Mustangs and returns four starters and eight letterwinners off a 2012 team that finished sixth in the GPAC with a 7-9 record, 17-16 overall. They were picked to finish eighth in the GPAC preseason poll.
Morningside ranks eighth in the middle of the pack in both kills (12.4), hitting percentage (.189) and blocks (1.6). Senior Maggie Vondrak leads the Mustangs in kills (3.7) and is second on the team in digs (3.6). The two-time all-conference pick hits .223 on the outside and is also among the team leaders in blocks (43) and aces (19). Sophomore Gabi French averages 2.6 kills per set and is hitting .150 as the other outside hitter. Junior Kecia Verburg leads the team with 80 blocks and puts down over two kills per set. Grace Chvatal anchors the backline with five digs per set, second most in the conference.
Northwestern News and Notes...Fifth-ranked Northwestern finished the GPAC regular season with an undefeated 16-0 record, capturing its fourth regular season title under head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch and ninth overall. It was the fourth time the Red Raiders went undefeated in regular season play under Van Den Bosch, also accomplishing it three straight years (2008-10). Northwestern has won 31 straight matches and is 32-1 overall.
Northwestern is fifth in the NAIA with a .280 kill efficiency, putting down 13.4 kills per set. They are second in the GPAC in blocks (2.2) and ace serves (206). The Red Raiders have nice balance at the net with four players averaging better than two kills per set and five players over one kill. Kaitlin Floerchinger ranks fifth in the conference with 3.8 kills per set, hitting .236 on the leftside. She leads the GPAC with 71 ace serves. Karlie Schut puts down 3.7 kills per set and ranks ninth in the GPAC with a .272 kill efficiency. Haley Chambers (2.1), Kellie Goedken (2) and Payton Samuelson (1.2) are the other hitters for NWC. Brooke Fessler directs the Red Raider offense, lofting up 10.6 assists per set. Alexis Bart ranks sixth in the GPAC with 4.2 digs per set and has a 96% in serve receive.
