Red Raiders Host Dordt in Final Regular Season Match

Game Time...Northwestern College closes the regular season against Dordt on Wednesday night in a GPAC volleyball match-up between ranked teams. The JV match will begin at 6pm, followed by the varsity at 7:30pm. Northwestern, ranked fifth in the NAIA, is 15-0 in conference play and 31-1 overall while Dordt moved up to 16th in this week's poll and is 12-3 in the GPAC, 21-5 overall. All-Time...Northwestern holds a slim 38-36 lead in the all-time series (since 1989) and is 8-2 against Dordt over the last 10 match-ups. 

Last Time vs Dordt...Northwestern edged Dordt in a five-set match-up played on Sept. 24 in Sioux Center, Iowa. Both teams came into the match ranked and undefeated in conference play. Individual scores were 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 23-25 and 15-10. 

Tied at six in the final set, Northwestern scored three straight points on a kill by Brooke Fessler and back-to-back kills by Kaitlin Floerchinger. Following a Dordt timeout, the teams traded side outs until an attack error by the Defenders put Northwestern up 12-8. Leading 13-10, Northwestern finished off the match with a kill by Payton Samuelson and an attack error by the Defenders. 

Northwestern hit .317 for the match, led by Floerchinger with a career-best 23 kills. Karlie Schut put down 17 and Kellie Goedken added 10. Fessler lofted up 52 assists and Alexis Bart led the backrow with 22 digs. 

Dordt  hit .333 for the match and was led by Lindsey Floen and Brooke Wolterstorff with 20 kills each. Jenna Horstman added 15 kills and Kayla Gesink lofted up 60 assists. 

Scouting the Defenders...Ranked 16th in the Nov. 5 coaches' poll, Dordt is currently tied with Midland for second in the GPAC with a 12-3 record, 21-5 overall. They have won four straight and 10-of-the-last-11 matches, only losing to Hastings on Oct. 19. Dordt has wins over Briar Cliff, Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan and Doane during its current streak. 

Chad Hanson is in his third season as the Defenders head coach and owns 49-32 record heading into Tuesday's match. He returns seven players off a 2012 squad that finished tied with Midland for third place in the GPAC with an 11-5 record, 22-12 overall. Hanson guided Dordt to a fifth place finish in his first season (2011) and finished 16-17 overall. 

The Defenders are the top hitting team in the GPAC, ranking third in the NAIA with a .298 attack percentage. They average 13.7 kills per set and rank third in the conference in blocking (2.2). 

Senior middle hitter Lindsey Floen leads the GPAC in hitting percentage (.396), averaging 2.9 kills and 1.1 blocks per set, second most in the GPAC. Floen is a three-time all-conference selection. Freshman Brooke Wolterstorff  ranks ninth in the GPAC in kills (3), hitting .282, as well as averaging 2.6 digs per set. Jenna Horstman and Meghan Krausman combine to average nearly five kills per set on the outside. Junior All-Amercian Kayla Gesink directs the Defenders offense, ranking third in the GPAC with 10.5 assists per set. Gesink is also hitting .429 and averages 2.4 digs per set. Kayla Brokehuis returns as the team's libero and averages over five digs per set after earning all-conference honors last year. 

Northwestern News and Notes...With its five-set win over Midland last Saturday, Northwestern captured the GPAC regular season title for the fourth time in the past six years. The Red Raiders also won the title from 2008-10 under coach Kyle Van Den Bosch, in his ninth overall season with the program. Northwestern, ranked fifth in the NAIA coaches' poll, is 15-0 in the GPAC and 31-1 overall.

Northwestern ranks fifth in the NAIA, second in the GPAC, with a .285 attack percentage. They average 13.2 kills per set and rank second in the GPAC in blocks (2.2) and ace serves (195).

Kaitlin Floerchinger averages a team-best 3.8 kills per set, reaching double figures in 23 matches this season. The junior All-American leads the GPAC with 65 ace serves and also averages 2.9 digs per set. Karlie Schut is ninth in the GPAC with a .274 kill efficiency, averaging 3.7 kills per set. The sophomore has hit for double figures in all but two matches this season. Haley Chambers, the current GPAC player of the week, averages 2.1 kills and hits .283 as an outside hitter. Kellie Goedken puts down two kills per set and is fifth in the GPAC with 112 blocks while Payton Samuelson has 100 blocks. Brooke Fessler lofts up 10.6 assists and Alexis Bart leads the backrow with 4.2 digs per set.   

Up Next...Northwestern will host a GPAC Quarterfinal match on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 8:00pm against Morningside.
