Volleyball Heads to Yankton

Game Time...Fifth-ranked Northwestern begins the second half of its conference season as they play Mount Marty on Wednesday night, Oct. 16, in Yankton, S.D. at 6/7:30pm. The Red Raiders are in first place in the GPAC with an 8-0 record at the halfway point of the conference schedule, 24-1 overall. Mount Marty is 0-8 in the conference, 10-14 overall. All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 33-1 dating back to the 1989 season and has won the last 25 matches. 

Last Time vs Mount Marty...Northwestern earned a 3-0 win over the Lancers in the first conference game of the season played on Sept. 17 in the Bultman Center. Individual game scores were 25-13, 25-16 and 25-18. The Red Raiders hit .333 for the match, led by Kaitlin Floerchinger with 12 kills and 2.5 blocks. Haley Chambers added five kills and three solo blocks, hitting .333. 

Mount Marty was led by Sierra Kloth with nine kills while Bailey Kuchta had six. 

Scouting the Lancers...Mount Marty has dropped its last three matches and comes into Wednesday with an 0-8 conference record, 10-14 overall. Since earning a five-set win over Dakota State on Oct. 3, the Lancers have lost to Morningside, Briar Cliff and Hastings, all by 3-0 scores. 

Candice Climer begins her third season as the head of the Lancers' volleyball program and returns eight letterwinners from a 2012 team that finished 1-15 in the GPAC, 6-26 overall. 

Mount Marty is hitting .145 this season, 11th best in the conference, and puts down 10.9 kills per set. They have 115 ace serves and average 1.5 blocks per set. 

Sophomore Bailey Kuchta averages a team-high 2.4 kills per set, hitting .130 as one of the Lancers' outside hitters. Kristen Boyle and Allison Cross both average 1.9 kills and freshman Sierra Kloth puts down 1.9 kills per set. Cross, along with Lexie Branson, lead the team with 47 and 32 blocks, respectively. Caitlyn Illg directs the Lancers' offense as the team's setter for the third straight year, lofting up 8.2 assists per set. Courtney Miller leads the backrow with 3.2 digs per set. 

Northwestern News and Notes...Ranked fifth in the last NAIA coaches' poll (Oct. 8), Northwestern has won 23 straight matches and sits in first place in the GPAC with an 8-0 record. They are 24-1 overall, matching the fourth best start (2006) in the program's history. 

Kyle Van Den Bosch, in his ninth season as the head coach, has won over 250 matches during his career and has guided the Red Raiders to five national tournaments. 

Northwestern leads the conference in blocks (2.2 per set) and ranks second in hitting percentage (.290) and aces (158). Kaitlin Floerchinger ranks second in the GPAC with 3.95 kills per set, hitting .261 on the outside. She also leads the conference with 53 ace serves and averages 2.9 digs per set. Karlie Schut is fifth in the GPAC in kills (3.6) and aces (34) while hitting .276 as the team's rightside hitter. Haley Chambers averages just under two kills per set and has hit for double figures in seven matches this year. Kellie Goedken hits a team-best .346 out of the middle and leads the GPAC with 98 blocks. Payton Samuelson is hitting .308 and has 77 blocks in the other middle hitter spot. Brooke Fessler directs the Red Raider offense and lofts up 10.5 assists to go with 2.4 digs per set. Alexis Bart anchors the backrow with 4.4 digs per set.
