Volleyball Hosts Briar Cliff in GPAC Match-Up

Game Time...Fifth-ranked Northwestern hosts Briar Cliff in a GPAC volleyball match on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6/7:30pm in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders have won 22 straight matches and are currently in first place in the GPAC with a 7-0 record, 23-1 overall. All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 47-10 and has won the last 11 matches against the Chargers, including both matches last year. 

Scouting Briar Cliff...The Chargers are currently tied with Doane for sixth place in the GPAC with a 3-4 league record, 13-8 overall. They opened the year with six straight wins and are 7-8 over their last 15 match-ups. In league play, they have wins over Dakota Wesleyan, Mount Marty and Morningside and losses to Dordt, Midland, Hastings and Nebraska Wesleyan. 

Trevor Schirman is in his first season as the Chargers head coach, coming to BCU after serving as an assistant for University of California San Diego and UCLA. Schirman inherited a Briar Cliff team that returns five starters and 10 players off a 2012 team that finished tied for sixth place in the GPAC, along with Morningside and Nebraska Wesleyan, at 7-9. They were 20-15 overall. 

Briar Cliff ranks sixth in the GPAC with a .210 hitting percentage, averaging 12.7 kills per set. They are eighth in blocking (1.7) and are 10th in the GPAC with 87 ace serves. 

Senior Monica Boeding returns as one of the team's outside hitters, putting down a GPAC-best 3.9 kills per set. She is hitting .178 this season while also ranking second on the team in digs (3.2). Sophomore Breanna Nogelmeier, an all-conference selection last year, is hitting .291 and has 44 blocks this year. Brooke Maguire leads the team with 54 blocks and also returns as one of the teams middle hitters. Erin Frank returns as the team's setter and was a first team all-conference pick in 2012. She puts up 10.6 assists per set, second highest in the GPAC. Amy Frank averages 4.1 digs to lead the team's backrow. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders moved up to fifth in this week's edition of the NAIA coaches' poll, the first time Van Den Bosch's squad has been in the top five since 2010. They have won 22 consecutive matches and are undefeated in the conference at 7-0. 

Northwestern ranks second in the GPAC with a .289 hitting percentage, averaging 13.1 kills per set. They lead the conference in blocking (2.3 per set) and ace serves (154). 

Kaitlin Floerchinger averages a team-high 3.9 kills per set, second most in the GPAC. She is hitting .261 on the outside and has hit for double figures in 18 matches. Karlie Schut, the current GPAC player of the week, averages 3.6 kills per set, fifth best in the GPAC, and has reached double figures in 23 matches. Haley Chambers averages 1.9 kills per set and is hitting .269, also as an outside hitter. Kellie Goedken averages just over two kills per set and leads the conference with 96 blocks, fourth most in the NAIA. Payton Samuelson ranks fourth in the GPAC with 75 blocks. Brooke Fessler directs the Red Raider offense, lofting up 10.4 assists per set while also hitting .500 on the year. She also ranks third on the team with 2.5 digs per set. Alexis Bart, first team all-GPAC selection in 2012, leads the team in the backrow at 4.4 digs per set. 

Up Next...Northwestern will have the weekend off before heading on the road for two conference matches next week, beginning with Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D. on Oct. 16.
