Volleyball Heads to Mitchell

Game Time...Seventh-ranked Northwestern resumes it 2013 volleyball season on Tuesday night against Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, S.D. The Red Raiders are in first place in the GPAC with a 5-0 record, 21-1 overall. Dakota Wesleyan is 0-6 in conference play, 4-15 overall. All-Time...Northwestern holds a 25-1 all-time advantage in the series, winning the last 25 match-ups. The lone setback for the Red Raiders came in the 1990 season. 

Scouting Dakota Wesleyan...The Tigers head into Tuesday's match-up on a 10-game losing streak, dating back to its 3-1 win over Presentation (S.D.) on Sept. 3. DWU is 0-6 in conference play, 4-15 overall. Among its conference matches played this season are Briar Cliff, Concordia, Nebraska Wesleyan, Morningside, Midland and Hastings. Dakota Wesleyan has wins over William Penn, York, Valley City State and Presentation. 

Eric Viney is in his sixth season as the head of the DWU volleyball program and owns a 55-137 all-time record during his tenure. Viney guided his 2008 and 2009 teams to 13 wins and last year led the Tigers to a 7-27 overall record, 2-13 and 10th place in the GPAC. Four starters and eight players return off the 2012 squad. 

Dakota Wesleyan is hitting .141, putting down 10.4 kills per set as a team. They are 10th in the GPAC in blocks (1.4) and eighth in digs (15.02). 

Briana Jung returns as the team's setter, lofting up over six assists per set. The junior is in her third season as the Tigers' primary setter. Mallory Jark is the team's top hitter, hitting .286 and putting down 2.4 kills per set out of the middle. Jark, who missed last year due to injury, leads the team with 34 blocks. Sarah Kruse averages a team-best 2.44 kills per set, hitting .174 as one of the team's outside hitters. Sophomore Maggie Stehly returns in the backrow and averages a team-best 3.9 digs per set. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are currently in first place in the GPAC with a 5-0 record, 21-1 overall. They have won 20 straight matches since a five-set loss to Tabor in the second match of the year, climbing to seventh in last week's NAIA coaches' poll. With one more win, they will surpass the 2012 season win total where they went 21-10, earning votes in the final poll. 

Northwestern is second in the GPAC, fifth in the NAIA, with a .289 kill efficiency, averaging over 13 kills per set. They lead the GPAC in total aces (142) and blocking (2.3) as well. 

Kaitlin Floerchinger ranks second in the conference with 3.98 kills per set, hitting .264 as one of the team's outside hitters. She also ranks fifth in the NAIA with 46 ace serves. Karlie Schut is fourth in the GPAC with 3.6 kills per set, reaching double figures in 21 of the 22 matches played. Schut is hitting .273 while also ranking third in the GPAC with 30 aces. Haley Chambers is hitting .261 and putting down 1.9 kills per set. Kellie Goedken (2.1kps) and Payton Samuelson (1.1kps) total 89 and 66 blocks per set as the team's middle hitters. Brooke Fessler lofts up 10.5 assists and averages 2.5 digs per set. Alexis Bart leads the team with 4.4 digs per set, ranking fifth in the GPAC. 

Up Next...The Red Raiders will play host to Midland on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1:30/3pm in a GPAC match-up between ranked teams.
